3 Star vs 5 Star AC: Which to Buy in India (Bill Savings and Payback Maths)

Short answer: a 5-star AC uses less electricity than a 3-star AC of the same tonnage. Whether that saving pays back the higher price depends on three numbers: how many hours a year you run it, your per-unit electricity rate, and the price gap between the two models you are comparing. If you run the AC most of the day for most of the year, or the price gap is small (a few thousand rupees inside the same brand), buy the 5-star. If you use it a couple of hours on summer nights, or the 5-star costs ₹15,000+ more, a 3-star inverter AC is usually the better buy.
You do not need to guess. The BEE star label already prints most of what you need. This guide shows how to read it and run the maths yourself.
What the star rating actually measures
India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) rates split and window ACs on ISEER, the Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. ISEER is the cooling an AC delivers across a typical Indian season, divided by the electricity it uses to do it. A higher ISEER means more cooling for each unit of electricity, and a higher ISEER earns more stars.
Two things about star ratings trip buyers up:
- The bands get stricter over time. BEE raises the ISEER needed for each star level every few years, and a new table applies to labels from January 2026. A model sold as 5-star before then can carry fewer stars under the newer table even though nothing about the machine changed.
- Stars are a band, not a number. Two "3-star" ACs can be quite far apart inside the band, and a high-end 3-star can come close to a low-end 4-star.
So compare the ISEER value and the annual energy consumption (kWh/year) printed on the label, not just the star count. Both are on the BEE label on the box and usually on the product page as well.
How to read the BEE label in 30 seconds
Look for these three items on the label:
- Star rating and label year. Check the year printed on it. A label from an older period was judged against older bands.
- ISEER. Higher is better. This is the cleanest number for comparing two models.
- Annual energy consumption in kWh/year. This assumes a fixed number of running hours a year (BEE uses 1,600 hours for AC labels). This is the number you will use for your bill maths.
The two-minute payback calculation
Here is the method with example numbers. These label figures are illustrations only, so replace them with the numbers from the two models you are actually comparing.
Step 1: find the yearly unit gap at label hours. Say the 3-star model's label reads 900 kWh/year and the 5-star reads 700 kWh/year. The gap is 200 units a year at the label's 1,600 hours.
Step 2: scale it to your real hours. Count your actual use. Eight hours a night for about 200 nights is 1,600 hours, the same as the label. Ten hours a day for 300 days is 3,000 hours, which is about 1.9× the label.
- Light user (1,600 h): 200 units saved a year
- Heavy user (3,000 h): about 375 units saved a year
Step 3: multiply by your tariff. Use the per-unit rate on your electricity bill. Residential rates vary a lot by state and by slab, and the top slab is the one that matters here, because AC units land on top of your other usage. At ₹8 a unit:
- Light user: about ₹1,600 a year saved
- Heavy user: about ₹3,000 a year saved
Step 4: divide the price gap by the yearly saving. That gives the years to break even.
| Price gap (5-star minus 3-star) | Light user (₹1,600/yr) | Heavy user (₹3,000/yr) |
|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | about 3 years | under 2 years |
| ₹10,000 | about 6 years | about 3.3 years |
| ₹17,600 | about 11 years | about 5.9 years |
If the break-even comes in well within the years you expect to keep the AC, the 5-star is the better buy. If it is close to the AC's whole working life, or past it, buy the 3-star and keep the difference.
A real price gap from today's deals
The price gap is the number most buyers never check, and sale prices move it a lot. Two 1.5-ton split inverter ACs live on RichDeals right now:
- Hitachi 1.5 Ton 5 Star inverter split AC with Wi-Fi (RAS.Y519PC) at ₹50,990 (MRP ₹84,990)
- LG 1.5 Ton 3 Star split inverter AC at ₹33,388 (MRP ₹65,400)
That is a ₹17,602 gap, the bottom row of the table above. These are different brands with different features, so this is not a pure star-rating comparison. It still shows how a large gap pushes break-even far out for anyone who uses the AC lightly. The same maths flips when a brand's own 5-star model sells only a few thousand rupees above its 3-star model, which often happens during sales. Deal prices change daily, so check each deal page for the current price.
When to buy a 5-star AC
- You run it a lot. That means a home office, a room for the elderly or a baby, or a hot city where the AC runs from March to October.
- The price gap is small. Compare models of the same brand and tonnage, where the gap is often much smaller than across brands.
- You are on a high tariff slab. The more you pay per unit at the top of your bill, the faster the saving adds up.
- Your room has a heavy heat load. A top-floor flat, a west-facing wall or a room with a lot of glass keeps the compressor working hard for longer.
When a 3-star AC is the smarter buy
- Seasonal or night-only use. At a few hundred hours a year, the yearly saving is small.
- The gap is wide. Spend the difference on a better installation, a stabiliser if your area needs one, or the next size up if the room really needs it.
- Rented homes or short stays. You may move before the saving pays back, and reinstallation has its own cost.
Things that matter as much as stars
- Right tonnage for the room. An undersized AC runs flat out all the time and loses the efficiency it was rated for. As a rough guide, 1 ton suits small bedrooms, 1.5 ton suits a medium bedroom or living room, and 2 ton suits large or hot rooms. Sun, floor level and the number of people change this.
- Inverter vs fixed speed. Almost all current split ACs are inverter models. An inverter compressor slows down once the room is cool instead of switching fully on and off.
- Installation quality. Correct gas charge, short and well-insulated copper piping, and an outdoor unit with room to breathe affect your bill directly.
- Set point and maintenance. Running at 24°C instead of 18°C, cleaning filters every few weeks in season, and an annual service keep real consumption close to the label figure.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 5-star AC always save money?
It always uses less electricity than a comparable 3-star model. It only saves you money overall when the bill saving over the years you own it is larger than the extra price you paid.
Is a 4-star AC worth considering?
Yes. Run the same payback maths on its label figures. A 4-star model priced close to the 3-star can be the best value of the three.
My old AC said 5-star. Why does a new one with similar specs say 4-star?
BEE tightens the ISEER bands from time to time. Labels issued under the newer table need a higher ISEER for the same number of stars.
