ANC dB Ratings Explained: 32dB vs 50dB, Hybrid ANC and ENC (India Guide)

Short answer: the "32dB" or "50dB" printed on an ANC earbud box is the maker's own best-case measurement of how much background noise the earbuds remove. A higher number usually means stronger cancellation, but there is no common test that every Indian brand has to follow, so two "40dB" products can sound very different in your ears. Check three things before you trust the number: whether the ANC is hybrid (microphones outside and inside the bud), whether it says ANC or only ENC, and how well the ear tips seal.
This guide explains what the decibel number does and does not tell you, and then shows real ANC deals we have posted on RichDeals so you can see where each price tier sits.
What "dB of noise cancellation" actually measures
A decibel (dB) is a ratio, not a fixed amount of sound. When a brand says "up to 40dB ANC", it means that in its own test setup, sound reaching the ear was up to 40 decibels quieter with ANC switched on than with no earbud at all, or with ANC off. Brands do not always say which.
Two facts make the number hard to compare:
- The scale is logarithmic. Every 10dB cut sounds roughly half as loud to most people. So the jump from 30dB to 40dB is bigger in practice than the jump from 20dB to 30dB looks on paper.
- "Up to" is the peak, not the average. ANC cancels some frequencies far better than others. The headline number is usually the best result at one narrow band of low-frequency hum, not across everything you hear on a Delhi Metro platform.
Some listings write the same figure as "-40dB". The minus sign only means "reduced by". 40dB and -40dB are the same claim.
What ANC is good at, and what it is not
Active noise cancellation works by playing an inverted copy of incoming sound so the two cancel out. That works best on steady, low-pitched noise:
| Noise | How well ANC handles it |
|---|---|
| Bus or train engine drone, aircraft cabin hum | Very well, this is what ANC is built for |
| Ceiling fan, AC compressor, fridge hum | Well |
| Office chatter, a TV in the next room | Partly. Voices sit higher and change constantly |
| Pressure cooker whistle, horns, a dog barking | Poorly. Sudden, high-pitched sounds get through |
High-pitched sound is mostly blocked by passive isolation: the physical seal of the ear tip or ear cushion. That is why the same earbud can sound far quieter after you switch to a better-fitting tip size. If an ANC product sounds weak, try every tip size in the box before you blame the ANC.
Feedforward, feedback and hybrid ANC
The microphone layout matters more than the dB number.
- Feedforward ANC uses a microphone on the outside of the earbud. It hears noise before it reaches your ear and cancels it in advance. It is stable and cheap to build, but it cannot tell how well the bud is sealed in your ear, so results vary from person to person.
- Feedback ANC uses a microphone inside, near the speaker. It hears what actually reaches your ear and corrects it. It is stronger at low frequencies but harder to tune.
- Hybrid ANC uses both. The outside mic cancels most of the noise and the inside mic cleans up what leaks past. It covers a wider range of frequencies and adapts better to different ear shapes, at the cost of a little more battery drain.
Rule of thumb: a hybrid design with a modest claim often beats a feedforward design with a bigger claim. If the listing does not say "hybrid", assume feedforward.
Adaptive ANC is a further step. The earbuds adjust their cancellation strength to the surroundings or to the fit. It is useful, but it is a software feature on top of the microphone design, not a separate kind of ANC.
ENC is not ANC: the most common listing confusion in India
Many budget listings on Amazon and Flipkart say "ENC" in large type. ENC stands for environmental noise cancellation, and it works on the microphone: it cleans up your voice for the person you are calling. It does nothing for what you hear.
| Term | What it does | Who benefits |
|---|---|---|
| ANC (active noise cancellation) | Cuts background noise in your ears | You, while listening |
| ENC (environmental noise cancellation) | Cuts background noise from your mic | The other person on a call |
| Quad-mic / AI call noise reduction | A stronger version of ENC | The other person on a call |
| Transparency / ambient mode | Lets outside sound in on purpose | You, when you need to hear traffic or announcements |
If a product under ₹1,000 lists "ENC" but not "ANC", it is not a noise-cancelling earbud for listening.
How much ANC do you actually need?
Brands in India commonly print claims in these bands. Treat them as rough labels, not lab results:
| Claimed ANC | Typical use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 20–30dB | Gym, home, light commuting | Takes the edge off fan and traffic hum |
| 30–40dB | Daily bus, metro or local train commute | Noticeable quiet on engine drone, voices still come through |
| 40–50dB, hybrid | Long commutes, flights, open offices | Strong low-frequency cut, depends heavily on fit |
| 50dB+ | Mostly a marketing peak figure | Judge by reviews of real use, not the number |
For most commuters, a well-fitting hybrid ANC earbud in the 30–40dB class covers the daily need. Paying more mainly gets you better tuning across frequencies, better call mics and better apps, not just a bigger number.

| Product | Type | ANC as listed | Price at posting |
|---|---|---|---|
| boAt Rockerz 280 ANC neckband | Neckband | ANC (no dB figure listed) | ₹1,294 (Croma) |
| Lava Probuds Wave 931 | Neckband | 30dB ANC | ₹1,299 |
| realme Buds T200 | TWS earbuds | 32dB ANC | ₹1,699 |
| boAt Rockerz 512 ANC | Over-ear | Up to 40dB hybrid ANC | ₹2,499 |
| JBL Vibe Beam 2 | TWS earbuds | ANC + Smart Ambient | ₹2,999 |
| Noise Airwave Max 5 | Over-ear | Adaptive hybrid ANC, up to 50dB | ₹3,499 |
| Bose QuietComfort Earbuds | TWS earbuds | Bose ANC (no dB figure listed) | ₹9,999 |
Two patterns stand out:
- Big brands often print no dB number at all. JBL and Bose describe their ANC without a headline figure. A missing number is not a weakness; it often means the brand competes on tuning, not on the spec sheet.
- Over-ear beats in-ear at the same price. At ₹2,500–3,500, over-ear headphones list hybrid ANC with 40–50dB claims, while earbuds at the same price list lower figures. Big ear cushions add passive isolation that a small earbud cannot match.

A 60-second checklist before you buy ANC earbuds
- Find the word "ANC", not just "ENC", in the listing title or spec table.
- Look for "hybrid", which means microphones inside and out.
- Check battery life with ANC on. Many listings quote playtime with ANC off. Expect less with it on.
- Check the tip sizes in the box. Three sizes (S/M/L) is the minimum; the seal is half the result.
- Read reviews that mention your commute, such as metro, bus, flight or office, rather than the star rating alone.
- Compare the price per feature, not per dB. A 32dB hybrid pair that fits you will sound quieter than a 50dB feedforward pair that doesn't.
Frequently asked questions
Is 32dB ANC good enough?
For home, gym and short commutes, yes. It noticeably cuts fan and engine hum. For long train journeys or flights, look for hybrid ANC at 40dB or more, or over-ear headphones.
Is 50dB ANC twice as good as 25dB?
No. Decibels are logarithmic, and both numbers are best-case peaks measured by the brand. A 50dB claim usually means stronger low-frequency cancellation, but fit and design matter just as much.
Does ANC protect my hearing?
Indirectly. With background noise reduced, most people play music at a lower volume. ANC does not limit volume by itself, so keep levels moderate.
Why do my ears feel "pressure" with ANC on?
Some people feel a mild, cabin-like pressure because low-frequency sound has been removed. It usually fades with use. A lower ANC level or transparency mode helps if it doesn't.
Can I get real ANC under ₹1,500?
Yes. Neckbands and some TWS earbuds list 25–30dB ANC at this price. Check that the listing says ANC, not just ENC.
