What actually causes dandruff (30-second version)

Dandruff is mostly driven by Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone's scalp and feeds on skin oils. When it overgrows, it irritates the skin, which flakes and itches. How often to use it (the step everyone skips)

More is not better. Medicated shampoos are treatments, not daily cosmetics:

• Zinc pyrithione / piroctone: up to 3–4 times a week while flaring, then 1–2x to maintain.
• Ketoconazole: 2x a week, max. Daily use dries the scalp and can backfire.
