BLDC vs Normal Hair Dryer: Which Should You Buy in India?

Short answer: A BLDC (brushless DC) hair dryer is worth the extra money if you dry long or thick hair most days. Its small, high-speed motor pushes much stronger airflow, so hair dries mainly from moving air rather than high heat. That means less time with hot air on your hair, a lighter dryer in your hand and, usually, a longer-lasting motor. If you dry short hair a few times a week, a normal 1000–1600W dryer does the job for a fraction of the price. On RichDeals, regular dryers from Havells, Philips and Syska have been tracked between ₹534 and ₹1,437, while the AGARO Royal BLDC dryer was tracked at ₹4,797.

This guide explains the three motor types sold in India, what changes in daily use, and how to choose.

The three kinds of hair dryer motor

Almost every dryer on Amazon and Flipkart uses one of three motors. Product listings rarely say which, so here is how to tell.

Motor type Typical listing Weight in hand Typical price on our deals
Brushed DC motor Compact or foldable, 1000–1600W, "travel" Light ₹500 – ₹1,000
AC motor "Professional", "salon", 2000W+, long cord Heavy ₹1,000 – ₹3,000
BLDC (brushless DC) "BLDC", "brushless", RPM figure like 100,000+ Lightest for its power ₹3,000 and up
  • Brushed DC motors are what most budget compact dryers use. They are cheap and light, but carbon brushes inside wear down over time, and airflow is modest. To make up for weak air, these dryers rely more on heat.
  • AC motors are the old salon workhorse. They are durable and push a lot of air, but they are bulky and heavy, which is tiring when you dry long hair.
  • BLDC motors have no brushes. Electronics drive a small magnet rotor at very high speed. The result is strong, focused airflow from a motor small enough to sit in the handle.

What actually changes when you switch to BLDC

1. Drying comes from air, not heat

Hair dries when water evaporates and is carried away. A normal dryer leans on temperature to speed this up. A BLDC dryer moves far more air, so it can dry at a lower heat setting. For colour-treated, keratin-treated or frizz-prone hair, spending less time under high heat is the main reason to upgrade.

2. Less weight on your wrist

Because the motor is tiny, BLDC dryers are typically lighter and better balanced than an AC dryer of similar power. If drying takes you more than 10 minutes, you will notice this every day.

3. Motor life

With no brushes to wear out, a BLDC motor has fewer parts that degrade. A brushed DC dryer often loses airflow gradually over a few years. Heating elements and switches can still fail on any dryer, so check the warranty period rather than assuming a BLDC unit will last forever.

4. Noise

BLDC dryers tend to produce a higher-pitched but lower overall noise. Cheap units can whine. Read recent reviews for noise complaints before buying.

What BLDC does not fix

  • Wattage is not airflow. A 2000W label tells you how much power the heater and motor draw, not how fast the air moves. A 1600W BLDC dryer can dry faster than a 2200W AC dryer.
  • Ionic and ceramic claims are separate. These features are added to all motor types. They are not a reason to buy BLDC on their own.
  • It is still a heat tool. Use a heat-protectant spray and the lowest heat that works, whatever motor you have.

Who should buy which

Your situation Pick
Short hair, dry 2–3 times a week Brushed DC compact dryer, 1000–1200W
Medium hair, daily use, budget under ₹1,500 1600W dryer with 3 heat settings and a cool shot
Long or thick hair, daily use BLDC dryer
Chemically treated or damaged hair BLDC dryer, used on low heat
Travel only Foldable 1000–1200W dryer
Men's short hair and beard styling 1200–1600W with a thin concentrator nozzle

What to check on the box before you pay

  1. Motor type written clearly. If a listing says "BLDC" only in the title but the spec sheet lists a normal DC motor, skip it.
  2. Heat and speed settings. Look for at least 2 speeds and 3 heat levels, plus a cool shot button to set your style.
  3. Concentrator nozzle. Needed for straight, sleek styling. A diffuser helps with curly hair.
  4. Removable filter. Lint builds up at the back. A clogged filter makes any dryer overheat.
  5. Overheat protection. Most branded dryers cut out when too hot. Look for it in the specs.
  6. Indian plug and cord length. A 1.8 m cord is comfortable. Check for a standard Indian 2-pin plug.
  7. Warranty and service. Havells, Philips and Syska have wide service networks. Smaller BLDC brands may only offer replacement by courier.

Frequently asked questions

Is a BLDC hair dryer better than a normal one?

For daily drying of long or thick hair, yes. It dries mainly with strong airflow instead of high heat, weighs less and has no brushes to wear out. For short hair used a few times a week, a normal dryer is enough.

Does a higher wattage hair dryer dry faster?

Not always. Wattage measures power draw, mostly for the heater. Drying speed depends on airflow, which comes from the motor. A BLDC dryer at lower wattage can beat a higher-wattage AC dryer.

Do BLDC hair dryers damage hair less?

They let you dry at lower heat because airflow does more of the work. Less heat exposure is gentler on hair, but any dryer can cause damage on its highest setting. Use heat protectant and moderate heat.

How much does a BLDC hair dryer cost in India?

Most branded BLDC dryers in India sell from around ₹3,000 upward. Normal compact dryers from Havells, Philips and Syska often sell between ₹500 and ₹1,500 during deals.

How do I know if a hair dryer is BLDC?

The listing and box should say "BLDC" or "brushless motor", and usually quote a motor speed in RPM. If the specification table lists only "DC motor" or "AC motor", it is not BLDC.
