Most Bluetooth speaker listings in India lead with a number that tells you almost nothing. "500W PMPO" on a speaker the size of a water bottle is not a lie exactly, but it is not a measurement you can shop with either. This guide explains what each spec on a product page actually means, which ones change how the speaker sounds in your room, and which ones you can safely ignore.

The short answer

If you only read one section: look at RMS watts (not PMPO), the driver size and count, the IPX or IP rating, and the honest playtime at high volume. Bluetooth version and codec matter much less than the marketing suggests for a speaker, because the speaker is doing the decoding and the amplification either way.

Watts: RMS is the real number, PMPO is not

There are two wattage figures on Indian listings and they are not comparable.

RMS (Root Mean Square) is continuous power the amplifier can deliver without distorting. This is the number engineers use. A 5W RMS portable is a personal desk speaker. 10-20W RMS fills a bedroom. 30-60W RMS is party-speaker territory for a hall or terrace.

PMPO (Peak Music Power Output) is an unregulated marketing figure. There is no standard defining how it is measured, so one brand's 500W PMPO and another's 500W PMPO describe different products. As a rough habit, treat PMPO as somewhere around ten times the RMS figure and then ignore it.

When a listing says "20W" without saying which, check the detailed specification table further down the page. If a product only ever quotes PMPO and never RMS, that is itself a signal.

A second trap: a "20W" stereo speaker usually means two 10W drivers, not two 20W drivers. Both are described as 20W speakers. Read the driver line.

Drivers and passive radiators: where bass actually comes from

The driver is the cone that moves air. Size is quoted in millimetres or inches, and physics is stubborn here β€” a 40mm driver in a pocket speaker cannot produce deep bass no matter what the DSP does, because it cannot move enough air.

A passive radiator is the second thing to look for. It is a driver with no voice coil β€” no electrical input at all. It is pushed by the air pressure the real driver creates inside the cabinet, and it extends bass without drawing power. On the small cylindrical speakers most people buy in India, the flat disc you can see vibrating at either end is usually a passive radiator. Two passive radiators on a compact speaker generally means the designer took bass seriously.

The alternative is a bass port β€” a tuned hole in the cabinet. Ports are cheaper and work well, but they also let water in, which is why heavily waterproofed speakers tend to use sealed enclosures with passive radiators instead.

Water resistance: IPX4 and IPX7 are not close

This is the spec people misread most often, and it is the one that decides whether your speaker survives a year.

  • IPX4 β€” splash resistant from any direction. Fine for rain on a balcony, a kitchen counter, sweat at the gym.
  • IPX5 β€” resists a low-pressure water jet. Comfortable near a pool or in a bathroom.
  • IPX6 β€” resists powerful jets.
  • IPX7 β€” survives submersion in 1 metre of water for 30 minutes. This is the rating that means "it can fall in the pool".
  • IP67 β€” the first digit is dust. 6 means dust-tight, so IP67 is IPX7 plus full dust sealing. Worth paying for if the speaker travels, goes to the beach, or lives on a construction-adjacent balcony.

The X in IPX means dust was simply not tested β€” not that it failed. An IPX7 speaker may well resist dust; the manufacturer just did not certify it.

One thing no rating covers: none of these ratings include salt water, and most manufacturer warranties exclude liquid damage regardless of the IP rating. Rinse a speaker with fresh water after the beach.

Bluetooth version, range and codecs

Bluetooth version (5.0 through 5.4) mainly affects connection stability and power draw, not sound quality. Anything 5.0 or newer is fine. The quoted range β€” usually 10m, sometimes 30m or 100m β€” assumes a clear line of sight. A single brick wall in an Indian flat cuts it substantially, so treat the headline range as a best case.

Codecs get far more attention than they deserve on speakers:

  • SBC is mandatory on every Bluetooth audio device. Every speaker supports it.
  • AAC is what iPhones prefer and is widely supported.
  • LDAC (Sony) and aptX (Qualcomm) carry more data. They make a measurable difference on good headphones. On a β‚Ή1,500 speaker with a 50mm driver, the driver is the bottleneck long before the codec is.

Buy the codec if you already own a matching source and a speaker good enough to show the difference. Do not pay a premium for LDAC on an entry-level model.

Multipoint β€” connecting two source devices at once, so a call on your phone interrupts music from your laptop β€” is a genuine daily convenience and is often not mentioned in the headline specs. Check the detail table.

TWS pairing (sometimes "stereo pairing" or "dual audio") links two identical speakers into a left-right stereo pair. If you think you might buy a second one later, confirm the model supports it, because it only ever works with the same model.

Battery: read the conditions, not the hours

Playtime claims are measured at moderate volume β€” commonly around 50%, sometimes 60%. At full volume, real playtime is frequently half the number on the box, because amplifier draw rises steeply with output.

mAh alone does not let you compare across models either. A 2000mAh battery in a 5W speaker lasts far longer than 2000mAh in a 20W speaker. Compare the quoted hours, note the volume assumption if the brand states one, and mentally halve it for party use.

Charging port matters more than it sounds: USB-C is now standard and worth insisting on. Some budget models still ship micro-USB.

Specs that are mostly noise

  • Frequency response quoted as "20Hz-20kHz" with no tolerance figure (like Β±3dB) is unverifiable. Without the tolerance, the range is meaningless.
  • "HD sound", "3D surround", "DSP-enhanced" β€” no defined measurement behind any of them.
  • Signal-to-noise ratio above roughly 80dB is inaudible in a normal room.
  • PMPO, as covered above.

Features actually worth checking in India

Budget models sold here often include an aux 3.5mm input (useful for an old TV or a laptop), a microSD slot, and FM radio. These are genuinely handy and frequently missing from premium imports, which assume you only stream. If your speaker needs to work without Wi-Fi or a phone, check for them explicitly.

A built-in mic turns the speaker into a speakerphone. Quality varies widely and is rarely worth testing in a review, but its presence is a fair tiebreaker.

Putting it together

For a bedroom speaker under β‚Ή2,000, prioritise a 50mm+ driver with a passive radiator, IPX5 or better, USB-C, and 10W RMS or more. For outdoor use, IPX7 or IP67 is the line worth crossing, and 20W RMS is the practical floor. For a desk, almost anything modern works and you should optimise for size and multipoint instead.

Is a higher wattage speaker always louder?

Not reliably. Loudness depends on driver efficiency and cabinet design as well as amplifier power. A well-designed 15W RMS speaker can sound louder and fuller than a poorly designed 25W one.

Does Bluetooth 5.3 sound better than Bluetooth 5.0?

No. Newer versions improve connection stability, power efficiency and pairing speed. Audio quality is set by the codec, the driver and the amplifier.
