Cervical Pillow Buying Guide: Height, Shape and Sleep Position (India)

Short answer: Choose a cervical pillow by height first, shape second, brand last. Side sleepers need a taller pillow that fills the gap between the ear and the outer edge of the shoulder. For most adults that is around 4 to 5.5 inches at the neck ridge. Back sleepers need a lower one, about 3 to 4 inches, so the chin doesn't tip towards the chest. Stomach sleepers do best with a very low, soft pillow, or none at all. If you aren't sure, a contour pillow with two different ridge heights is the safest buy, because you can turn it around to switch heights. Expect one to two weeks of getting used to it. Good memory foam cervical pillows are currently live on RichDeals for ₹500 to ₹800, and paying ₹3,000+ mostly buys a brand name, not better support.

A cervical pillow does not treat a neck condition. It holds your neck in a neutral line while you sleep, so the muscles aren't strained for seven hours. If you have numbness, tingling in the arms, or pain after an injury, see a doctor or physiotherapist first. Pillow choice comes after that.

Step 1: Find your sleep position

Most people sleep in more than one position, so go by the position you wake up in most mornings.

Sleep position What the pillow must do Typical ridge height
Side Fill the shoulder gap so the head stays level with the spine Higher, about 4 to 5.5 inches
Back Support the curve of the neck without pushing the head forward Lower, about 3 to 4 inches
Mixed side and back Offer two heights, or an adjustable insert Dual-height contour
Stomach Keep the neck as flat as possible Very low and soft, 2 to 3 inches, or none

These heights are a starting range, not a medical prescription. People with broad shoulders need the top of the side-sleeper range. People with a narrow frame or a soft mattress need the lower end, because the shoulder sinks into a soft mattress and the gap shrinks.

Step 2: Measure the shoulder gap (2 minutes)

You need a tape measure and a second person.

  1. Stand straight against a wall, relaxed.
  2. Measure from the side of your neck, just under the ear, out to the edge of your shoulder. This is roughly the gap a side-sleeper pillow has to fill.
  3. Take off about an inch if your mattress is soft or medium, because the shoulder sinks in and the gap gets smaller.
  4. Compare the result with the ridge height in the listing. That is the height of the raised part under your neck, not the overall pillow thickness.

Many Indian listings show only the overall size (for example 60 x 35 cm). If the ridge heights aren't listed, check the product photos for a measured diagram, or read the questions-and-answers section, before buying.

Step 3: Pick the shape

Shape How it works Best for Watch out for
Contour (wave) Two ridges of different heights with a dip for the head Most people, especially back and side sleepers Pick a model with two different ridge heights
Cool gel contour Contour foam with a gel layer on top People who find memory foam warm in Indian summers Gel makes the surface feel less warm; it doesn't cool the room
Neck roll (bolster) A firm cylinder under the neck Back sleepers, reading in bed, use alongside a normal pillow Too narrow for side sleeping on its own
Butterfly A dip in the middle with raised wings Back sleepers who turn onto the side Wings can feel bulky
Wedge A sloped foam block Raising the upper body for acid reflux or snoring Not a neck-support pillow
Travel U-shape Wraps around the neck Sitting up on flights, buses and in the car Not for bed use

Step 4: Firmness and foam

  • Memory foam moulds slowly to your neck and holds the shape. It is the most common material in Indian cervical pillows. Memory foam reacts to temperature, so cheaper foam can feel very firm in winter and softer in summer.
  • High-resilience (HR) or PU foam springs back faster and feels bouncier. It is good if you change positions a lot.
  • Firmness: medium-firm suits most people. Too soft lets the head sink, which defeats the purpose. Too hard presses on the back of the skull.
  • Cover: a zipped, removable, washable cover matters more than the fabric name. You can't put the memory foam itself in a washing machine.
  • Smell: new foam often smells when you unpack it. Leave it in a ventilated room for a day or two.

Step 5: Give it time

A cervical pillow changes the angle your neck has rested at for years. Some stiffness in the first few nights is common. Use it every night for one to two weeks before you decide. If the pain gets clearly worse, or you start getting headaches, the height is probably wrong:

  • Side sleeping, the lower side of your neck aches when you wake up: the pillow is too low.
  • Side sleeping, the upper side aches: the pillow is too high.
  • Back sleeping, your chin is pushed towards your chest: the pillow is too high.

Check the return window before buying. A pillow you can return within 7 to 10 days lets you test the height safely.

How long does a cervical pillow last?

Plan on replacing it every two to three years. Replace it sooner if the foam stays dented after you get up, the ridge has gone flat, or your old neck pain has come back. A memory foam pillow that has lost its shape supports you no better than an ordinary pillow.

Frequently asked questions

Which cervical pillow height is right for me?

Side sleepers usually need about 4 to 5.5 inches at the neck ridge and back sleepers about 3 to 4 inches. Measure the gap from your neck to the edge of your shoulder, take off about an inch for a soft mattress, and pick a pillow whose ridge height matches.

Is a cervical pillow good for side sleepers?

Yes, if it is tall enough. Use the higher ridge of a dual-height contour pillow. Rest your neck on the ridge and keep your shoulder below the pillow, not on it.

Can I use a cervical pillow if I sleep on my stomach?

It is usually a poor fit. Stomach sleeping already turns the neck to one side, and a raised ridge adds to the strain. A very thin, soft pillow is better, or try to shift to side sleeping over time.

Memory foam or cool gel: which is better in Indian summers?

Plain memory foam can feel warm. A cool gel layer makes the surface feel less warm when you lie down. A breathable, washable cover and a fan matter just as much.

How long before a cervical pillow feels comfortable?

Most people adjust within one to two weeks. If the pain clearly worsens after that, the height is probably wrong for you, so return it while you are still inside the return window.
