Cycle Size by Height: 20T vs 24T vs 26T vs 27.5T (India Chart + Fit Test)

Short answer: In India, the "T" in a cycle size is the wheel diameter in inches. Pick it by the rider's height:

  • Up to 4 ft: 12T to 16T
  • 4'0" to 4'6" (about ages 7 to 10): 20T
  • 4'6" to 5'2" (about ages 10 to 14): 24T
  • 5'0" to 5'8" (teens and most adults): 26T
  • 5'4" to 6'0"+ (adults, especially for mountain bikes): 27.5T or 29T

Use the bands that overlap as a tie-breaker. A growing child should go up a size only if they can already touch the ground on their toes. An adult who rides mostly in the city can stay on 26T. After the wheel size, check the frame size (in inches). It decides whether the cycle actually fits.

Cycle size chart by height (India)

Wheel size Rider height Typical age Common style
12T to 14T 2'9" to 3'5" 2 to 5 years Kids' cycle with training wheels
16T 3'5" to 4'0" 4 to 7 years Kids' cycle, sometimes with training wheels
20T 4'0" to 4'6" 7 to 10 years Kids' MTB or fat bike, first cycle with gears
24T 4'6" to 5'2" 10 to 14 years Junior MTB or city cycle
26T 5'0" to 5'8" 13+ and adults Classic Indian roadster, city bike or MTB
27.5T 5'4" to 6'0" Adults Modern mountain bike or hybrid
29T / 700C 5'8" and taller Tall adults Hybrid, road bike or large MTB

These are starting points, not laws. Brands cut their frames differently, so two 26T cycles can fit quite differently. Always read the listing's recommended height range.

Wheel size vs frame size: two different numbers

Most confusion comes from mixing these up.

  • Wheel size (T): the diameter of the tyre in inches. It changes how the cycle rolls. Bigger wheels roll over potholes and speed breakers more easily, but they feel slower to start and turn.
  • Frame size: the length of the seat tube, measured in inches (or cm). It decides whether the rider can stand over the bar and reach the handlebar comfortably.

A 26T cycle can come with a 15", 17" or 19" frame. A shorter adult (around 5'2") wants the small frame. A 5'10" rider wants the large one. If a listing gives only the wheel size, look for the frame size in the specification table or images.

Quick frame guide for adults:

Rider height MTB frame Hybrid / road frame
5'0" to 5'4" 13" to 15" 47 to 50 cm
5'4" to 5'8" 15" to 17" 50 to 54 cm
5'8" to 6'0" 17" to 19" 54 to 56 cm
6'0"+ 19"+ 56 cm+

The 30-second fit test

If you can see the cycle in a shop, or once it is delivered, do these three checks.

  1. Standover: stand over the top bar with flat feet. You want about 2 to 5 cm of gap between you and the bar for a city cycle, and a little more for an MTB.
  2. Saddle height: sit on the saddle and put your heel on the pedal at its lowest point. Your leg should be almost straight. When you pedal with the ball of your foot, the knee keeps a slight bend.
  3. Reach: with your hands on the grips, your elbows should be slightly bent. If you are stretched flat or cramped, the frame is the wrong size.

For kids, add one more: they should be able to put both feet down on their toes while sitting. That is what stops falls at a red light.

Should a child get the bigger size "to grow into"?

This is the most common buying mistake. A cycle that is too big is hard to stop, hard to balance and scary to ride. Kids who get one often stop cycling.

A better approach:

  • Buy for the child's current height if they are near the bottom of a band.
  • Go one size up only if they are near the top of the current band and the bigger cycle's saddle drops low enough for toe-touch.
  • Expect to change the cycle about every two to three years until about age 13, when 24T or 26T sizes start to last.

A child at 4'5" usually rides a 20T comfortably and moves to 24T within a year. A child at 4'8" can usually go straight to 24T.

Single speed or gears?

  • Single speed: cheaper, almost no maintenance, ideal for flat city roads, school and market runs. Most Indian roadsters and many kids' cycles are single speed.
  • Geared (7, 18 or 21 speed): worth it if you have slopes, flyovers or long rides. Gears need occasional cleaning and adjustment. Without that, a cheap derailleur skips and frustrates.

For a child's first cycle, single speed is usually better: one less thing to learn. Gears make sense from 24T onwards.

Mountain bike, city bike or fat bike?

  • MTB (front suspension, knobby tyres): handles broken roads and dirt tracks. The suspension adds weight. On a budget cycle, the fork is often basic, so don't expect off-road performance.
  • City / roadster (often with a carrier and mudguards): upright, comfortable and practical for errands. Smoother tyres roll more easily on tar roads.
  • Fat bike (very wide tyres): stable and fun for kids, but heavy and slower. Good for a 7 to 10 year old learning balance, less good for long rides.
  • Hybrid (700C or 27.5T, flat bar): for adults who want fitness rides on roads. It's faster than an MTB but less tough on rough patches.

Steel or alloy frame?

Most cycles under ₹8,000 have hi-ten steel frames. They are strong and cheap to repair, but heavier. Alloy (aluminium) frames are lighter, so climbing and lifting the cycle up stairs are easier, and they don't rust. For a kid who has to carry the cycle up to a flat, the weight difference is real. Check the listed weight if it is given.

Budget guide

  • Under ₹3,500: kids' 16T to 20T cycles and tricycles. Simple, single speed.
  • ₹3,000 to ₹5,000: 24T and 26T single speed MTBs and city bikes with steel frames.
  • ₹5,000 to ₹9,000: steel MTBs with front suspension and alloy rims, some with gears.
  • ₹10,000+: alloy frames, better gears and disc brakes.

Brakes: V-brakes are fine for city use. Disc brakes stop better in rain, but cheap mechanical discs need regular adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

What size cycle is right for a 5 ft 6 in adult?

A 26T city cycle or MTB fits most riders at 5'6". For a mountain bike, 27.5T with a 15" to 17" frame also works. Check that you have a few centimetres of standover clearance.

Which cycle size is right for a 10-year-old?

It depends on height, not age. Most 10-year-olds are between 4'4" and 4'8". Below about 4'6", choose 20T. Above that, a 24T usually fits.

What does 26T mean on a cycle?

It means the wheels are 26 inches in diameter. It does not tell you the frame size, which you should check separately.

Is 27.5T better than 26T?

27.5T wheels roll a little more easily over bumps and suit taller riders. A 26T cycle is lighter to steer, cheaper, and the tyres are easier to find at local cycle shops in India. For city riding, either is fine.

Can an adult ride a 24T cycle?

An adult under about 5'2" can, especially if the frame is sized for adults. Taller riders will feel cramped, and their knees will come up too high.
