Glass Top vs Stainless Steel Gas Stove: Which to Buy in India

Short answer: buy a glass-top gas stove if looks and quick wipe-downs matter most to you and you are careful with heavy pots. Buy a stainless steel gas stove if you cook with heavy kadhais and pressure cookers every day, have kids or a busy kitchen where things get dropped, or want the lowest price for the burners you get. For either type, choose brass burners over aluminium if your budget allows. Check for the ISI mark under IS 4246, the BIS standard for LPG stoves sold in India.
This guide compares the two tops on cleaning, strength, heat, price and upkeep. It also shows real gas stove deals we have posted on RichDeals, so you can see what each type costs.
Glass top vs stainless steel at a glance
| Glass top | Stainless steel | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Glossy, modern, suits modular kitchens | Plain, utilitarian |
| Daily cleaning | Easiest: flat surface, one wipe | Easy, but shows water spots and streaks |
| Takes a heavy knock | Can crack or shatter if hit hard | Can dent, but won't break |
| Heat near the burners | Can get hot; avoid cold water on hot glass | Handles heat well; may discolour over time |
| Typical deal price we've seen | ₹1,299 – ₹3,999 (2–3 burners), ₹3,037+ (4 burners) | ₹5,749 – ₹6,749 (3–4 burner Sunshine models) |
These are the deal prices when we posted each stove, not today's guaranteed prices. Amazon and Flipkart stove prices change often, so check the live price on each deal page. Most budget deals we see are glass-top models, which is why the cheapest glass stove costs less than the steel ones in this table. In shops, a basic steel stove is usually the cheaper option.
Glass-top gas stove: easy to clean, needs care
A glass-top stove has a sheet of toughened (tempered) glass over a metal body, with the burners and pan supports sitting on top. It is the most common style in Indian online stove sales today.
- Best for: modular kitchens, people who cook light to medium meals, and anyone who hates scrubbing.
- Key benefit: spills sit on a flat, non-porous surface, so a damp cloth clears most of them. It also looks clean and new for longer.
- Honest drawback: glass can crack if you drop a heavy pan, knock a cylinder key or lid onto it, or pour cold water on it while it is hot. Toughened glass breaks into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, which is safer, but the stove is then out of use until the glass is replaced.
- Look for: the glass thickness in the listing. Thicker glass generally resists knocks better; for example, the Tower 3-burner we posted lists 8 mm toughened glass. Also look for a spill tray, sturdy pan supports that keep pots off the glass, and a glass warranty. Some brands, such as Sunshine on its Regal Pro, offer long warranties on glass and burners.
Glass-top deals we have posted include the Lifelong 2-burner glass-top stove at ₹1,299, the Longway Astra 3-burner (ISI) at ₹1,999, the Cello Hexa 2-burner toughened glass stove at ₹2,092, the Tower 3-burner with 8 mm glass at ₹3,999 and the Lifelong 4-burner glass-top (ISI) at ₹3,037.
Stainless steel gas stove: built for heavy daily cooking
A stainless steel stove has a steel top and body with no glass. It is the classic Indian chulha look.
- Best for: big families, daily heavy cooking (a large kadhai, a 5-litre cooker, a tawa all at once), rental homes, and kitchens where kids or helpers move fast.
- Key benefit: nothing on it can shatter. A dropped vessel may leave a dent, but the stove keeps working. Steel also copes better with very high heat for long periods.
- Honest drawback: steel shows water marks, oil streaks and fingerprints, and the area around the burners can turn yellow or brown with heat over time. It looks more basic in a modern kitchen.
- Look for: a thick steel sheet that does not flex when you press it, rounded edges, and a warranty on the body. Steel tops come in different grades, and listings often don't say which one. A listing that names the grade is easier to judge.
Steel deals we have posted include the Sunshine CT900 4-burner stainless steel stove at ₹5,749 and the Sunshine Thunder 3-burner steel chulha at ₹6,749. The Thunder lists a 5-year warranty on burner and body.
The middle path: steel body, glass top
Many newer stoves mix both: a stainless steel body and frame with a glass cooktop. You get the easy-clean glass surface, and a frame that doesn't rust or chip like a painted or powder-coated body can. Examples we have posted: the USHA Ebony Neo Slim 3-burner with a stainless steel body and glass cooktop at ₹5,037 and the Golden Surya CXJ 32 SS with a steel body, toughened glass top and forged brass burners at ₹5,605.
Burners matter more than the top
The top is what you see, but the burner decides how well the stove cooks and how long it lasts.
- Brass burners are heavier and hold up to years of heat and cleaning. Most mid-range glass and steel stoves now use them.
- Aluminium burners are lighter and cheaper. They are fine for light use but tend to wear faster with daily heavy cooking.
- Burner sizes: a stove with one large burner and smaller ones is useful. Use the big flame for the cooker and kadhai and the small flame for simmering dal or making tea.
The ISI rule: IS 4246
Domestic LPG stoves in India fall under IS 4246, the BIS standard covering construction, safety, flame stability and gas tightness. A government Quality Control Order makes BIS certification compulsory, so a stove sold for home LPG use should carry the ISI mark with a licence number. Look for the mark on the stove itself or in the listing photos, not only in the title. You can check the licence number on the BIS Care app.
If your building has piped gas (PNG), check that the listing says PNG compatible or that the brand supplies PNG nozzles. Some stoves we have posted, like the Sunshine Thunder, say so in the title.

Care tips that make either stove last
- Glass: let it cool before wiping, and never splash cold water on hot glass. Use a soft cloth, not steel wool. Keep pans on the pan supports and never rest them directly on the glass.
- Steel: wipe spills while warm (not hot) with mild soap. Dry it to avoid water spots. For heat stains, a little baking soda paste works without scratching.
- Both: clean the burner holes with a pin every few weeks so the flame stays blue. A yellow or uneven flame usually means blocked holes. Check the gas hose for cracks and replace it when it shows wear.

Frequently asked questions
Is a glass-top gas stove safe?
Yes, if it is ISI certified and you use it with care. The glass is toughened, so if it breaks it falls into small blunt pieces. Avoid hitting it with heavy vessels and avoid thermal shock from cold water.
Which lasts longer, glass top or stainless steel?
A stainless steel top has nothing that can shatter, so it usually survives rough use better. A glass top with brass burners and a thick glass sheet can still last many years with careful use.
Does a glass top use more gas than stainless steel?
The top material does not decide gas use. The burner design and flame size do. Brass burners with a well-designed flame spread cook efficiently on either type.
Can I use a heavy pressure cooker on a glass-top stove?
Yes, the pan supports carry the weight, not the glass. Choose a model with sturdy pan supports, and set heavy vessels down gently.
