GSM is a weight measurement: weigh one square metre of the fabric and you get its GSM. A 360 GSM cloth has 360 g of fibre per square metre; a 600 GSM cloth has 600 g.

More weight usually means:

• Longer, denser pile — the cloth feels plush and thick.
• More absorbency — it holds more water before it starts dripping.
• Slower drying — it stays damp longer on a line, which matters in the monsoon.
• Higher price per cloth.

What GSM does not tell you is the quality of the fibre itself. Microfibre is usually a blend of polyester and polyamide (nylon).
