USB-C Hub vs Docking Station: Will HDMI Work, and How Much Charging Do You Get?

Short answer: a USB-C hub is a small, bus-powered adapter that adds ports to one laptop USB-C socket. A docking station has its own power supply and is built for a desk with one or more monitors. Before you buy either, check one thing: your laptop's USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode (or Thunderbolt / USB4) for the HDMI port on any hub to work. If it does not, the hub's USB and card slots will work but the screen will stay blank.

USB-C hubs are one of the most returned laptop accessories, and the reason is almost always the same: the buyer's port does not carry video, or the hub's HDMI runs at 30Hz when they expected 60Hz. This guide covers the checks in order.

Does my laptop's USB-C port support HDMI out?

Look for any of these:

  • A DisplayPort "D" logo or a lightning bolt (Thunderbolt) icon printed next to the port.
  • "DP Alt Mode", "DisplayPort over USB-C", "Thunderbolt 3/4" or "USB4" in the laptop's spec sheet.
  • The laptop maker's support page listing "video output" for that port.

If the spec sheet only says "USB-C 3.2" or "data only", assume no video. Many budget laptops have a USB-C port that charges and transfers data but cannot drive a monitor. Phones vary too: some Android phones support display output over USB-C, many do not.

HDMI 1.4 vs HDMI 2.0: what does "4K" really mean?

"4K" on a hub box does not tell you the refresh rate.

Hub HDMI version Best it does What it feels like
HDMI 1.4 4K at 30Hz, or 1080p at 60Hz Fine for video and spreadsheets; laggy mouse at 4K
HDMI 2.0 4K at 60Hz Smooth for everyday work at 4K
HDMI 2.1 (rare in hubs) 4K at 120Hz and above Gaming monitors

If you plan to use a 4K monitor for work, look for "4K@60Hz" in the listing. If you use a 1080p monitor, almost any hub with HDMI is enough.

How much charging does PD pass-through give?

Most hubs have a USB-C "PD" port so you can charge the laptop through the hub. Two things to know:

  • The hub keeps some power for itself, often in the range of 10-15W. A 65W charger plugged into the hub may deliver noticeably less to the laptop.
  • The hub has its own limit. If the listing says "PD up to 60W" and your laptop wants 100W, it will charge slowly or only hold its level under load.

Use your laptop's own charger, check the hub's PD rating, and expect a small drop.

Can I run two monitors from one hub?

It depends on the laptop.

  • Windows laptops with DP Alt Mode can drive two screens from some hubs using a feature called MST, but many cheap hubs only support one.
  • Macs do not support MST. A hub with two HDMI ports will usually mirror the same picture on both screens on a Mac. Some base MacBook models support only one external display at all.
  • Docking stations that use Thunderbolt or DisplayLink are the reliable way to run two or three monitors.

Hub or dock: which should I buy?

You need Buy
Extra USB-A ports and an SD slot while travelling Small USB-C hub
One external monitor plus charging USB-C hub with HDMI and PD
Two or more monitors, wired Ethernet, one-cable desk setup Powered docking station
Just a monitor, nothing else A simple USB-C to HDMI cable

What else should I check?

  • USB speed: "USB 3.0" or "USB 3.2 Gen 1" ports run at 5Gbps; "USB 2.0" ports are much slower and only suit mice and keyboards.
  • Card readers: SD and microSD slots are handy for cameras; check whether both can be used at once.
  • Ethernet: a gigabit port helps on video calls when Wi-Fi is weak.
  • Heat: hubs get warm when charging and driving a screen at the same time. An aluminium body handles this better.
  • Cable length: a short built-in cable can leave the hub dangling from a raised laptop stand.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my USB-C hub's HDMI port show no signal?

The most common reason is that the laptop's USB-C port does not support DP Alt Mode. Try the hub on another port, update graphics drivers, and check the laptop's spec sheet.

Can a USB-C hub damage my laptop?

A reputable hub will not. Avoid unbranded hubs with no PD rating, and do not plug a phone charger into the PD port to run a laptop.

Do I need a dock for one monitor?

No. A hub with HDMI is enough for one monitor if your port supports video. A dock is for multi-monitor or one-cable desk setups.

Does a USB-C hub work with an iPad or Android phone?

Recent iPads with USB-C support hubs with HDMI. Android support for display output varies by phone, but USB storage and keyboards usually work.
