Fire TV Stick Remote Not Working? 7 Fixes to Try Before You Replace It

Short answer: If your Fire TV Stick remote is not working, start with fresh batteries, then hold the Home button for 10 seconds to re-pair it. If that fails, restart the stick and do a full remote reset: unplug the stick, hold Left + Menu + Back for about 12 seconds, take out the batteries, plug the stick back in and press Home. Most "dead" remotes come back with one of these steps. A replacement is only worth buying when the remote shows no light at all with new batteries, or has physical damage.

The fixes below run from fastest to slowest. Stop at the first one that works.

Fire TV Stick remote not working: quick diagnosis table

Match what you see to the likely cause before you start pressing buttons.

What you see Most likely cause Fix to try first
No light on the remote when you press a button Dead or badly seated batteries Fix 1: replace batteries
Light blinks but the TV does nothing Remote has lost its pairing Fix 3: re-pair with Home
Works only when you sit close to the TV Weak batteries or signal blocked Fix 1 and Fix 2
Some buttons work, others do not Software glitch on the stick Fix 5: restart the stick
Navigation works but TV volume and power do not TV control (IR/HDMI-CEC) not set up Fix 6: Equipment Control
Nothing works even after all of the above Remote hardware fault Fix 7: reset, then replace

Fix 1: Replace or reseat the batteries

Weak batteries are the number one reason a Fire TV remote stops responding. The remote often keeps blinking on low power but cannot hold a Bluetooth link.

  • Use two fresh AAA alkaline batteries from a new pack, not ones pulled from another device.
  • Check that the + and – ends match the markings inside the battery slot.
  • Rechargeable cells run at a slightly lower voltage, and some remotes behave erratically on them. Test with alkaline first.

If you can still reach the menu (with the phone app, see below), go to Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes and select your remote. The battery level is shown there.

Fix 2: Check the distance and line of sight

The Fire TV remote uses Bluetooth, so it does not need to point straight at the TV the way an old IR remote does. Range is still limited, though. Sit within about 3 metres (10 feet) of the stick and try again.

If the stick is plugged into the back of a wall-mounted TV, the TV's metal frame can weaken the signal. The HDMI extender cable that comes in the Fire TV box moves the stick away from the metal and often fixes "works only up close" problems.

Fix 3: Re-pair the remote with the Home button

A remote can lose its pairing after a power cut, a software update, or a battery change. Re-pairing takes 10 seconds:

  1. Stand close to the TV.
  2. Press and hold the Home button for about 10 seconds.
  3. Watch the screen for a pairing message, or the remote's light for a quick blink.
  4. Release and try navigating.

If the screen shows nothing, repeat it once more. A brand-new or replacement remote is paired the same way.

Fix 4: Free up Bluetooth connections

The Fire TV Stick can only hold a limited number of Bluetooth devices at once. Paired headphones, game controllers and speakers can crowd out the remote. Open Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices, remove devices you no longer use, then re-pair the remote with Fix 3.

Fix 5: Restart the Fire TV Stick

A frozen stick looks exactly like a dead remote. Restart it in one of two ways:

  • From the menu: Settings > My Fire TV > Restart.
  • From the power socket: unplug the stick's power adapter (not just the TV), wait 60 seconds and plug it back in.

Use the power adapter that came in the box. Powering the stick from the TV's USB port is a common cause of random freezes, because many TV USB ports do not supply enough current.

Fix 6: Fix TV volume and power buttons

If the remote moves through menus fine but the Volume and Power buttons do nothing, the remote itself is working. Those buttons control the TV directly, through infrared or HDMI-CEC, and that is a separate setting.

Go to Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV and run the setup. The stick plays music and asks you to press volume buttons until it finds your TV brand. Also check that HDMI-CEC is turned on in your TV's own settings. Brands give it different names, such as Anynet+ on Samsung, SimpLink on LG and Bravia Sync on Sony.

Fix 7: Reset the remote completely

When nothing above works, a full reset clears the remote's memory. This is the sequence Amazon publishes for most Alexa Voice Remotes:

  1. Unplug the Fire TV Stick from power and wait 60 seconds.
  2. On the remote, press and hold Left, Menu (the three-line button) and Back together for about 12 seconds.
  3. Release, wait 5 seconds, then remove the batteries.
  4. Plug the Fire TV Stick back in and wait about 60 seconds for the home screen.
  5. Put the batteries back in and press Home to pair.

The button combination can differ on older remote models, so check Amazon's help page for your exact remote if this one does not trigger a reset.

A factory reset of the stick itself (Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults) is the last resort. It wipes your apps, logins and settings, so try it only after the remote reset fails.

Control Fire TV from your phone while you troubleshoot

Install the free Amazon Fire TV app, connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi as the stick, pick your device and type the code shown on the TV. The phone becomes a full remote, which is the easiest way to check battery levels, restart the stick or run Equipment Control while the physical remote is dead.

When to buy a replacement Fire TV remote

Buy a new remote if the light never turns on with fresh batteries, if buttons are physically stuck or cracked, or if the remote has had water damage. You have two choices.

Option What it is Points to check
Official Amazon Alexa Voice Remote Amazon's own remote with voice, plus TV volume and power buttons The listing names which Fire TV generations it supports; the 1st-gen Fire TV Stick is usually excluded
Third-party replacement remote Cheaper remotes from other brands, sold as Fire TV compatible Check the seller's compatibility list, whether voice works, and the number of ratings

Before you buy, find your Fire TV model under Settings > My Fire TV > About. Match that model to the compatibility list on the product page. Compatibility claims on third-party remotes come from the seller, so the ratings and reviews are your best check that it pairs with your stick.

On RichDeals we track Fire TV accessories as they drop in price. Right now there is a deal on the Angrox replacement remote for Fire TV Stick 3rd Gen, HD and 4K, a budget third-party option. Confirm your model is on its compatibility list before ordering.

If your stick is old enough that the remote is the least of its problems, a new stick often costs only a little more than an official remote. The Amazon Fire TV Stick HD (newest model) comes with its own Alexa Voice Remote in the box. Frequently asked questions

Why is my Fire TV Stick remote not working even with new batteries?

The most common reason is lost pairing. Hold the Home button for 10 seconds near the TV to re-pair it. If that fails, restart the stick from its power socket, then try the full remote reset (Left + Menu + Back for 12 seconds).

How do I reset my Fire TV Stick remote?

Unplug the stick for 60 seconds. Hold Left, Menu and Back together for about 12 seconds, wait 5 seconds and remove the batteries. Plug the stick back in, wait 60 seconds, reinsert the batteries and press Home to pair.

Why does my Fire TV remote work but the volume does not?

Volume and power buttons control the TV, not the stick. Run Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV, and turn on HDMI-CEC in your TV's settings.

Will any Fire TV remote work with my Fire TV Stick?

No. Remotes are matched to Fire TV generations, and the original 1st-gen Fire TV Stick is not supported by many newer remotes. Check your model under Settings > My Fire TV > About and match it to the remote's compatibility list before buying.
