How to Measure Laptop Size for a Sleeve, Bag or Backpack (India Guide)

Short answer: to measure laptop size for a sleeve, bag or backpack, close the laptop and measure its body width, depth and thickness in millimetres. Don't rely on the screen size printed in the listing. Then pick a sleeve or compartment whose internal dimensions are about 10–20 mm bigger on width and depth, and at least as deep as your laptop's thickest point. The "15.6-inch" or "16-inch" label on a bag is only a hint. Two laptops with the same screen size can need different bags.

This guide shows how to measure in under two minutes, explains why the 16:10 screens on newer laptops break the old size labels, and compares sleeves, backpacks and office bags.

Why screen size alone is not enough

The "15.6 inch" in a laptop name is the diagonal of the display, corner to corner. It is not the size of the laptop. Three things make the body bigger than the screen:

  • Bezels around the display. Thin-bezel models add very little; budget and older models add more.
  • The hinge and chassis edge below the screen.
  • Aspect ratio. This is the one most size guides skip.

The 16:9 vs 16:10 trap

Most laptops sold in India until a few years ago had 16:9 screens. Many newer models (especially 14-inch and 16-inch ones) use 16:10, which is a taller screen. Same-diagonal maths gives very different shapes:

Screen size Aspect ratio Screen width Screen height
13.3" 16:9 294 mm 166 mm
14" 16:9 310 mm 174 mm
14" 16:10 302 mm 188 mm
15.6" 16:9 345 mm 194 mm
16" 16:10 345 mm 215 mm
17.3" 16:9 383 mm 215 mm

Screen dimensions are calculated from the diagonal and aspect ratio. The laptop body is always larger than the screen.

The key row pair: a 15.6" 16:9 screen and a 16" 16:10 screen are the same width (345 mm). The 16" screen is about 21 mm taller. So a "fits up to 15.6 inch" bag often takes a 16-inch laptop side to side. Where it fails is depth: the laptop sticks out at the top, or the zip will not close around the corner. When a 16" laptop "doesn't fit a 15.6" bag", depth is almost always the reason.

Going from a 14" 16:9 to a 14" 16:10 works the same way. The new laptop is slightly narrower but about 14 mm deeper.

How to measure your laptop in 3 steps

You need a steel tape or a 30 cm ruler. A tailor's tape sags, so avoid it.

  1. Width: close the lid. Measure the longest side, left edge to right edge, including any protruding ports or hinge caps.
  2. Depth: measure front edge to back edge. On many laptops the hinge sticks out at the back, so measure from the very back of the hinge.
  3. Thickness: measure at the thickest point, usually the back near the hinge or vents. Include the rubber feet. A wedge-shaped laptop must pass through the zip at its thickest end, not its thinnest.

If you keep a snap-on hard shell on the laptop, measure with the shell on, because that is what goes into the bag.

Shortcut: search your exact model number plus "dimensions" on the brand's own spec page. Brands list W Γ— D Γ— H in mm. Still check thickness yourself if the laptop has a case.

How much clearance to leave

Write your three numbers down, then compare them with the bag's internal compartment size. Use the inside numbers, not the outside ones. Foam padding can take 5–10 mm off each side, so a sleeve's outer size says little about what fits inside.

Dimension What to look for Why
Width Laptop + 10–20 mm Room to slide in without dragging on the zip
Depth Laptop + 10–20 mm The zip corner needs space to turn
Thickness Laptop + 0–10 mm (sleeve), more for a backpack slot A loose sleeve lets the laptop rattle; a tight one strains the zip

Too little clearance and the zip track rubs the lid corners every day, which is where scuffs and dents start. Too much and the laptop slides around, and the padding cannot do its job in a drop.

Sleeve vs backpack vs office bag: which fits what

The way each bag holds the laptop changes how strict the fit has to be.

Bag type Fit tolerance Best for Watch out for
Laptop sleeve Tight; must match within ~1–2 cm Slipping inside another bag, carrying between rooms or meetings A sleeve "for 15 inch" may be cut for 16:9 bodies and too short for a 16:10 laptop
Backpack laptop compartment Moderate; padding flexes Daily commute, college, two-wheeler riders Check whether the slot is padded at the base; check the litre size separately
Office bag / messenger / tote Moderate to loose Office, client visits Laptop sits horizontally, so width is the limit, not depth

Orientation matters too. Backpacks usually hold the laptop vertically (depth runs top to bottom), and office bags and totes hold it horizontally. A 16" 16:10 laptop that is "too tall" for one backpack slot may sit fine in a 15.6" tote, because there its extra depth runs the other way.

Reading Amazon and Flipkart listings

Indian bag listings usually say "fits up to 15.6 inch laptop" and stop there. Before you buy:

  1. Scroll to the product details for compartment dimensions in cm. If only the outer bag size is listed, subtract about 1–2 cm per side for padding.
  2. Check the Q&A and reviews for your laptop brand and model. Someone with the same laptop has usually posted whether it fits.
  3. A 16" laptop is safest with a bag that explicitly says "up to 16 inch", like the HP Campus Core 16 backpack or the ASUS AP1601 16-inch backpack.
  4. For a classic 15.6" 16:9 laptop, a "15.6 inch" sleeve such as the HP 15-inch water-resistant sleeve or a backpack like the Skybags Brat Pro Max (up to 15.6 inch) is the normal match.
  5. Small 11.6" netbooks and tablets with keyboards need a small sleeve, like the 11.6-inch TheSkinMantra sleeve. A 15-inch sleeve lets them slide around.

Common mistakes

  • Buying by screen size alone. A 15.6" gaming laptop is often much thicker than a 15.6" thin-and-light, and the same sleeve will not take both.
  • Forgetting the charger. A sleeve holds only the laptop. If the charger brick has to travel too, a backpack or office bag with a separate pocket is more practical.
  • Ignoring the monsoon. Water-resistant fabric is not waterproof. For two-wheeler commutes in the rains, a separate rain cover for laptop backpacks adds more protection than any sleeve.
  • Measuring the open laptop. Always measure closed; the open footprint is irrelevant to bag fit.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 16 inch laptop fit in a 15.6 inch bag?

Often yes on width and no on depth. A 16" 16:10 screen is the same width as a 15.6" 16:9 screen (about 345 mm), but about 21 mm taller. Measure your laptop's depth and compare it with the bag's internal depth. If the gap is under 10 mm, choose a bag rated "up to 16 inch".

Will a 14 inch laptop fit in a 15.6 inch sleeve?

It will go in, but it will slide around, and a sleeve's job is a snug fit. For a backpack or office bag a smaller laptop in a bigger slot is fine. For a standalone sleeve, buy the 13–14 inch size.

Should I measure the laptop in inches or centimetres?

Use millimetres or centimetres. Indian bag listings that give a compartment size almost always give it in cm, and mm-level accuracy matters for a sleeve's thickness.

How much bigger should a laptop sleeve be than the laptop?

About 10–20 mm more on width and depth, and roughly equal to or slightly more than the laptop's thickest point. Compare against the sleeve's internal size, not the outer size.

Does the "fits up to 15.6 inch" label account for 16:10 screens?

Usually not explicitly. Most such labels were written with 16:9 bodies in mind. If your laptop has a 16:10 screen, check the compartment's depth in cm or look for a 16-inch rating.
