How Smart Door Locks Work: Fingerprint, PIN, RFID, Wi-Fi and Battery Explained (India)

Short answer: a smart door lock is an ordinary deadbolt or mortise lock with a small motor and a circuit board. The board checks your fingerprint, PIN, RFID card or phone app. When one matches, the motor moves the bolt. Everything runs on batteries, not mains power. If the batteries die, you can still get in with the mechanical backup key, or by powering the lock from outside through its emergency port (USB-C or 9V on most models). Wi-Fi and Bluetooth only add remote control and alerts. The lock still opens without the internet.
That is the whole idea. The details decide whether a smart lock suits your door, your family and your rental agreement, so this guide walks through each part in plain terms.
What is inside a smart door lock
Every smart lock in India has the same four building blocks:
- The outer panel. This holds the fingerprint sensor, the keypad and the card reader. It faces the corridor.
- The inner panel. This holds the battery box, the control board and usually a manual knob or handle.
- The motor and lock body. The motor throws or retracts the bolt. The lock body is the part that sits inside the door, like any mortise lock.
- The mechanical cylinder. This is the keyhole for the backup key, often hidden under a sliding cover.
Your fingerprints and PINs are stored on the lock's own board. Most models do not need a cloud account just to open the door. The app adds features on top.
Unlock methods compared
Most listings say "6-way" or "8-way" unlocking. That number is simply how many of the methods below the lock supports.
| Method | How it works | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fingerprint | Sensor scans your finger and compares it with a stored template | Daily family use, no key to carry | Wet, dusty or worn fingertips may need a second try |
| PIN code | You type a number on the keypad | Guests, house help, kids | Shoulder-surfing; many locks let you add random digits before or after the real code |
| RFID card or tag | A card is tapped near the reader | Elderly members, maids | A lost card must be deleted from the lock |
| Mobile app (Bluetooth) | Phone talks to the lock when you are standing near it | Unlocking without touching the panel | Needs your phone in range |
| Mobile app (Wi-Fi) / OTP | Lock is online; you can unlock or share a one-time code from anywhere | Letting in a delivery or relative while you are away | Needs a Wi-Fi model or a separate gateway |
| Mechanical key | Normal key in the hidden cylinder | Battery failure, electronics fault | Keep the key outside the house, not inside it |
A lock with fewer methods is not worse. Pick the methods your household will actually use. For a family with grandparents, fingerprint plus RFID card often matters more than app control.
What happens when the battery dies
This is the most searched worry, and the answer is reassuring.
- Low-battery warning first. Most smart locks beep, flash or send an app alert well before the batteries run flat. You get days or weeks of notice, not a sudden lockout.
- Emergency power port. If you ignore the warning, you can hold a power bank (USB-C models) or a 9V battery (older models) against the port on the outer panel. That powers the board just long enough to use your fingerprint or PIN once. It does not recharge the batteries, so replace them once you are inside.
- Mechanical key. The final fallback. It works with zero power.
Battery type and life differ by model. Some use AA cells, some use a rechargeable pack. Wi-Fi models drain faster than Bluetooth-only ones because they stay connected. Check the battery spec on the product page instead of trusting a single "1 year" claim.
Wi-Fi vs Bluetooth smart locks
| Bluetooth only | Built-in Wi-Fi | |
|---|---|---|
| Remote unlock from office | No | Yes |
| Live "door opened" alerts | Only when phone is near | Yes, anywhere |
| Battery drain | Lower | Higher |
| Works if home Wi-Fi is down | Yes | Yes, locally (fingerprint, PIN, card, key) |
| Typical price | Lower | Higher |
Some Bluetooth locks can go online later through a separate hub or gateway. If remote access matters to you, confirm whether the hub is included or sold separately.
Will it fit your door?
Most problems with smart locks are fit problems, not tech problems. Before buying, check three things in the listing's specification:
- Door material. Most Indian smart locks are built for wooden main doors. Metal doors, safety grills and glass doors usually need a different model or a special kit.
- Door thickness. Every lock lists a supported thickness range. Measure your door with a tape before you order.
- Opening direction and handle side. Left-hand and right-hand doors, and inward or outward opening, change how the lock body is installed. Many locks are reversible, but not all.
If the listing does not state the door type and thickness clearly, ask the seller or skip it.
Installation, and smart locks for renters
Fitting a smart lock means cutting or enlarging the mortise pocket in the door, drilling holes for the cable and screws, and aligning the strike plate. Many brands in India offer free or paid installation through their service network, so check that before buying. A handy person with a good drill can do it, but a misaligned bolt is the commonest cause of a lock that jams or drains its battery.
If you rent, the door belongs to your landlord. Get written permission before you cut it, and keep the old lock so you can refit it when you move out. Also reset the lock and delete every fingerprint and PIN before you hand back the keys.
Smart lock vs traditional lock: is it worth the money?
A good traditional lock is cheap and has no batteries to fail. A smart lock costs more but solves real daily problems: no keys for kids, codes for house help that you can delete any time, and a log of who opened the door and when.
Here is what that looks like at today's prices on our own listings (prices change, so open the deal for the live price):
| Lock | Type | Posted price |
|---|---|---|
| Plantex Triple Security brass lock | Traditional mechanical | ₹2,499 |
| Elara Echo Lite smart lock | Fingerprint, app, Wi-Fi | ₹4,628 |
| AGARO Royal smart lock with handle | Smart, auto-lock | ₹4,987 |
| Golens X3N 8-in-1 smart lock | Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, fingerprint, PIN, RFID, OTP, key; wooden main door | ₹5,990 |
| LAVNA LE50 digital lock | Digital | ₹6,879 |
| QUBO Smart Door Lock Select | 7-way, 2-year brand warranty | ₹13,990 |
So the jump from a solid mechanical lock to an entry smart lock is roughly ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 on these listings. Premium models with remote unlocking and longer warranties cost much more. If you only want a sturdy, low-maintenance lock for a bedroom or store room, our mortise door locks under ₹1,000 guide covers that end.

Frequently asked questions
Can a smart door lock open without internet?
Yes. Fingerprint, PIN, RFID card and the mechanical key all work offline because they are checked on the lock itself. The internet is only needed for remote unlocking, OTPs and alerts.
What if my smart lock battery dies while I am outside?
Hold a power bank or a 9V battery (depending on the model) against the emergency port on the outer panel, then use your fingerprint or PIN as usual. Or use the mechanical backup key. Replace the batteries once you are in.
Are fingerprint door locks safe?
They are as safe as the lock body and installation behind them. The fingerprint is stored as a template on the lock, not as a photo. Choose a model with a solid metal lock body and a mechanical cylinder, and get it fitted properly.
Can I install a smart lock on a metal or grill door?
Usually not with a standard model. Most smart locks sold in India are made for wooden doors. Look for a listing that names metal or grill doors explicitly, or ask the brand before buying.
Do smart locks work during a power cut?
Yes. They run on their own batteries, so a home power cut does not affect them. Only Wi-Fi features stop if your router is off.
