Waterproof Mattress Protector Buying Guide: Size, Depth and Fabric (India)

Short answer: buy a fitted protector with a terry cotton top and a TPU waterproof backing, in the exact length × width of your mattress (for example 78×72 inches for most king beds), with a skirt deep enough for your mattress thickness plus about 2 inches. In India that usually costs ₹350 to ₹750, which is a small fraction of what you paid for the mattress. Measure first, buy second. Most returns happen because the size or depth was wrong, not because the protector leaked.

A protector is not a mattress pad or a topper. It adds almost no softness. Its only jobs are to stop sweat, spills, tea, baby accidents and pet hair from reaching the foam, and to keep the mattress warranty valid, because most Indian mattress brands refuse stained mattresses on warranty claims.

Step 1: match the size (Indian mattress chart)

Indian mattresses are sold in inches, and the same "queen" label can mean two different lengths. Check the label on your mattress, or measure it with a tape, before you pick a protector.

Bed type Common Indian sizes (L × W, inches) Protector to buy
Single 72×30, 72×36, 75×36, 78×36 Same length × width, or one size longer
Double 72×48, 75×48, 78×48 Same length × width
Queen 72×60, 75×60, 78×60 Same length × width
King 72×72, 75×72, 78×72 78×72 also fits 72×72 and 75×72 if the elastic is good

A protector that is 2 to 6 inches longer than the mattress usually works, because the elastic skirt takes up the slack. A protector that is shorter than the mattress will not stay on. So if you are unsure between 72 and 78, choose 78. For bedsheet sizes on the same beds, see our bedsheet size guide for single to king beds.

Step 2: measure the depth (the step most people skip)

Lay a ruler flat across the top of the mattress and measure straight down to the base at one corner. Indian foam mattresses are usually 4, 5, 6 or 8 inches deep. Spring and hybrid mattresses can be 8 to 10 inches or more.

  • 4 to 6 inch foam mattress: almost any fitted protector works.
  • 8 inch mattress: look for a skirt that is stated to fit "up to 10 inches" or more.
  • 10 inch and above, or a mattress with a topper on it: you need a deep-pocket protector. Add the topper's thickness to the mattress thickness.

If the skirt is too shallow, the corners pop off in the night and the protector bunches into the middle of the bed. If it is far too deep, it slides around. Aim for a skirt rated about 2 inches more than your measured depth.

Step 3: pick the fabric and the waterproof layer

Almost every waterproof protector sold in India has two layers: a top fabric that touches your bedsheet, and a thin waterproof film underneath.

Type How it feels Waterproof? Best for
Terry cotton top + TPU backing Soft, towel-like, absorbs sweat Yes Most homes, hot climates, kids
Quilted cotton or polyester Slightly padded, warmer Often only water-resistant Cooler rooms, a little extra cushioning
Bamboo blend top + TPU Smooth, cooler to touch Yes People who sleep hot
PVC or vinyl sheet Plastic, crinkly, hot Yes Short-term use only, such as hospital beds

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the film you want. It is thinner, quieter and lets more air through than the old PVC sheets, which trap heat and make you sweat. If the listing says "water resistant" instead of "waterproof", expect it to slow a spill down, not stop it.

Noise: a thin, cheap film can crinkle when you turn over. A thicker terry top makes the protector quieter. A good fit matters too, because a loose protector shifts and rustles more.

Step 4: fitted skirt, elastic straps, or zip cover

  • Fitted (skirted): goes on like a fitted bedsheet. This is the easiest to wash, and it is what most deals listed below use.
  • Elastic corner straps: a flat sheet held on by four bands. It is cheaper, but it moves around and does not protect the sides of the mattress.
  • Zip encasement: covers all six sides. Worth it for dust-mite or bed-bug problems, but it is harder to take off for washing.

For a normal bedroom, a fitted skirt is the right default.

How to wash it without ruining the waterproofing

Follow the care label first. These general rules protect the TPU film:

  1. Wash every 2 to 4 weeks, and straight away after a spill or accident.
  2. Use cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle. Hot water and a high spin speed can split the film away from the fabric, and once it peels it stops being waterproof.
  3. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Both weaken the waterproof layer, and softener also makes terry less absorbent.
  4. Dry it in the shade or on low heat. Strong direct sun and a hot dryer are the two quickest ways to crack TPU. In the Indian summer, a few hours on a shaded line is enough.
  5. Keep a spare. If you have small children or pets, two protectors means the bed is never left unprotected while one dries.

When to replace it

Replace the protector when the backing starts to flake or crack, when water soaks through in a simple test (pour a little water on one corner and check underneath after 10 minutes), or when the elastic no longer holds the corners. With regular washing, that is usually after one to three years.

Buying a new mattress? Order the protector with it

The first week on a new mattress is when a spilled cup of chai does the most damage, and a stain at that point can complicate a warranty claim. If you are still choosing the mattress, our mattress guide under ₹10,000 explains foam types and sizes. For example, a 4-inch queen dual-comfort mattress like the Florance Flip 72×60×4 takes any standard queen 72×60 fitted protector.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a mattress protector?

Yes, if you want to keep the mattress clean and the warranty valid. A ₹400 to ₹700 protector stops sweat, spills and stains from reaching foam that costs several thousand rupees and cannot be machine-washed.

Will a waterproof mattress protector make me feel hot?

A terry cotton or bamboo top over a TPU film breathes reasonably well and feels like a sheet. PVC or vinyl protectors are the ones that feel hot and sticky, so avoid them for daily use.

Can I use a king-size protector on a queen mattress?

Not well. The extra 12 inches of width bunches up and slides. Buy the width that matches your mattress. A few extra inches of length is fine, but the width should match.

Is "water resistant" the same as "waterproof"?

No. A water-resistant protector slows a spill down, but enough liquid will soak through. For babies, older people or pets, buy one that says waterproof and has a TPU layer.

How do I measure mattress depth for a protector?

Measure from the top surface straight down to the bottom edge at a corner. Add any topper's thickness, then choose a protector whose skirt is rated about 2 inches deeper than that number.
