How to Port Jio to Airtel in India (2026): The Full Process

Porting a number from Jio to Airtel starts with one SMS: send PORT followed by a space and your 10-digit number to 1900. TRAI's Mobile Number Portability rules then run the rest — a Unique Porting Code arrives by SMS from 1901, you hand it to Airtel with your documents, and the number moves without changing.

Below is the process exactly as TRAI's official MNP FAQ defines it: the eligibility conditions, the real deadlines, the ₹6.46 charge, and the mistakes that get a porting request rejected.

How to port Jio to Airtel, step by step

1. Check you are eligible first. Your Jio connection must have been active for more than 90 days, any postpaid dues must be cleared, there must be no pending request to change ownership of the number, and if you have swapped or replaced the SIM recently, 7 days must have passed since that swap.
2. From the Jio SIM, send an SMS reading PORT 98XXXXXXXX — the word PORT, a space, then your own 10-digit number — to 1900.
3. Wait for the Unique Porting Code. It arrives as an SMS from 1901 and contains the UPC plus its expiry date. Do not delete it.
4. Note the expiry. The UPC is valid for 4 days in every licensed service area except Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and the North East, where it is valid for 30 days. The day it was generated is not counted.
5. Visit an Airtel store or an authorised Airtel retailer with the UPC, your ID and address documents, and the SIM. Airtel is the recipient operator and files the request on your behalf.
6. Fill and sign the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and the Porting Form, and submit the KYC documents Airtel asks for. Complete the eKYC or document verification then and there.
7. Pay the porting charge if Airtel asks for it. TRAI caps it at ₹6.46 per porting request; the recipient operator may levy it and may choose not to.
8. Collect the new Airtel SIM and keep both SIMs handy. You will get an SMS telling you the date and time window of the switchover.
9. On the cutover, your Jio SIM goes dead and the Airtel SIM activates. Insert the Airtel SIM, restart the phone, and confirm you can call. Your number does not change at any point.

How long the port actually takes

TRAI sets the timelines, not the operator's counter staff:

• 3 working days for a port within the same licensed service area.
• 5 working days for a port between different service areas, and for corporate numbers.
• Up to 15 working days for Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and the North East.

"Working days" is doing real work in that sentence — a request filed on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend lands well past the three-day mark in calendar terms. The actual outage during the switchover is short, typically a couple of hours while the routing updates, and usually scheduled at night.

Changed your mind

A porting request can be withdrawn by sending an SMS to 1900 within 24 hours of making the request. Past that window you are in the process, and the way back is to port again from the new operator — which puts you under the 90-day rule all over again.

Why porting requests get rejected

Almost every rejection maps to one of the eligibility conditions above:

Under 90 days on the connection. The number must have been active with Jio for more than 90 days. A recently taken connection simply cannot be ported yet.

Outstanding postpaid dues. Any unpaid bill on a postpaid Jio account blocks the port. Clear it, confirm the account shows zero, then request the UPC.

A recent SIM swap. If you replaced a lost or damaged SIM, 7 days must elapse before a port request is valid.

A pending ownership change. If a request to transfer the number to another person is in progress, the port cannot go through until that resolves.

An expired UPC. Four days is short. Get the code when you are actually ready to walk into the store, not a week in advance.

Mismatched documents. The KYC name and details submitted to Airtel must match the connection being ported. TRAI requires the CAF, the porting form and the requisite KYC documents; Airtel decides which specific documents satisfy that, so ask the store before you travel.

What does and does not carry over

The number stays. Everything else is a fresh start: your Jio plan, its validity, any remaining balance and any add-on packs stay with Jio and do not transfer. Balance left on a prepaid Jio account is effectively written off at the switchover, so run it down before you port rather than recharging just before.

Anything tied to the number rather than the operator — bank OTPs, UPI, WhatsApp, Aadhaar-linked services — keeps working, because the number is unchanged. What can break is a Jio-account-specific service such as JioTV or a Jio-bundled subscription, which is attached to the Jio account, not the number.

Time the port around your recharge
