How to Port Vodafone (Vi) to Airtel in 2026: SMS PORT to 1900

To port a Vodafone Idea (Vi) number to Airtel, send an SMS reading PORT followed by your 10-digit mobile number to 1900 from that Vi number. A Unique Porting Code comes back β€” Airtel says the reply arrives from 1901 β€” and you hand that code to Airtel along with ID and address proof when you order the new SIM. The number stays yours; the network behind it changes.

That is the whole mechanism. What follows is the part that actually decides whether your port goes through: the eligibility rules Vi applies before it will issue a code, what ends the moment you leave Vi, how long each operator says the switch takes, and the places where Vi's documentation and Airtel's documentation flatly disagree.

Porting Vi to Airtel, step by step

  1. Check you are eligible. Vi requires a minimum of 90 days of subscription with it before it will process a port, and on postpaid all outstanding dues must be cleared.
  2. From the Vi SIM, SMS PORT 9xxxxxxxxx (your own 10-digit number) to 1900.
  3. Read the reply. Vi sends the Unique Porting Code back to the same number; Airtel documents the reply as coming from 1901.
  4. Pick the Airtel plan you want and place the order β€” on airtel.in or through an Airtel store.
  5. Give Airtel the UPC plus a valid government-recognised photo ID and address proof.
  6. Let the Airtel executive complete KYC. Airtel states the new SIM is "delivered directly to your doorstep" and that there are "no costs involved in the entire process" for the delivery itself.
  7. Wait for the cutover SMS, then swap the SIM. Your Vi SIM stops working when the port completes; the Airtel SIM takes over on the same number.

Nothing in that list needs you to visit Vi. You never tell Vi you are leaving β€” requesting the UPC is the notice.

The Vi port code, and what 1900 actually wants

The code people search for as the "Vodafone port code" is two different things wearing one name.

1900 is the shortcode you SMS. It is the same number across every Indian operator, because it is the portability system's number, not Vi's.

The UPC is what comes back β€” the Unique Porting Code, described by Vi as an 8-digit code, which is the actual key Airtel needs. It is generated per request and tied to your number.

One detail worth getting right: Vi documents the message as "PORT < 10-digit mobile number to port>", that is, the word PORT, a space, then the number. Airtel's own guide shortens this to "stating PORT to 1900". Send the full form with your number β€” it satisfies both descriptions and costs nothing extra.

How long the UPC stays valid β€” the operators disagree

This is the first place the documentation splits, and it matters, because an expired code means starting over.

Vi publishes 15 days of validity for the UPC, with 30 days for the Jammu and Kashmir, North East and Assam service areas.

Airtel states plainly: "Your UPC, once generated, is valid only for four days."

Both are the operators' own published figures and we are not going to declare one wrong. The safe reading is the shorter one: treat the code as good for four days and complete the Airtel order inside that window. If you are porting from J&K, the North East or Assam, Vi's longer window is the one that applies to code generation in those circles β€” but there is no upside to sitting on it.

The eligibility rules Vi checks before issuing a code

Vi lists these, and a port request fails on any of them:

  • 90 days minimum. "Users must have a minimum of 90 days of subscription with their existing service provider." A number activated last month cannot be ported.
  • No outstanding dues. Postpaid bills must be cleared with Vi before the port is processed.
  • No ownership transfer in progress. "Change of ownership of the mobile number should not be in process."
  • No contractual obligation. "Any pending contractual obligations should be fulfilled before porting requests."
  • No court restriction. "The mobile number should not be prohibited by any court of law for porting."

Airtel's side of the same list is shorter and consistent: the number "needs to be at least 90 days old" with the current operator, no outstanding postpaid bills, and no contractual obligations attached.

The one that catches people is the ownership transfer. If you moved a number into your own name recently β€” from a former employer, a parent, a company account β€” that transfer has to be finished and settled before a port will run.

How long the port takes: three different published answers

The second and larger conflict.

Vi breaks it down by geography: 3 working days within the same Licensed Service Area, up to 5 working days when the port crosses circles, and up to 15 working days for Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North East.

Airtel gives a faster picture: "the entire process takes barely 48 hours" for a within-state port, and "up to a maximum of 4 days" for cross-state. Elsewhere Airtel describes TRAI's updated norms as completing the whole MNP process within four days.

Three published timelines, two operators, one process. We are recording them rather than averaging them into a number nobody publishes. Plan for the longer end β€” Vi's working-day figures are the conservative read, and a working day is not a calendar day when a weekend or a holiday sits in the middle.

What ends when you leave Vi

Porting keeps your number. It keeps almost nothing else.

Your Vi balance and pack do not travel. Talk time, an active data pack, unused validity β€” all of it stays with the Vi account and is gone. Run the balance down before you port rather than recharging into a switch. Our Vi balance guide covers checking what is still sitting on the number, including remaining validity, which is the figure worth timing the port around.

Vi-side services stop. Caller tunes, Vi App subscriptions and any add-on packs are Vi products and end with the account.

Your number, contacts, WhatsApp and UPI carry on. They are tied to the number, not the operator. WhatsApp keeps working; UPI apps keep working, though some will re-verify the SIM by sending a silent SMS, so keep the new SIM in the same slot the app was set up on.

Your circle does not change. Porting does not move your home circle. A Delhi number ported to Airtel is still a Delhi number.

Cancelling a port request

If you change your mind after requesting the code, the UPC can simply be allowed to expire β€” an unused code ports nothing. Vi also publishes a cancellation route for a port request already applied for, and the practical version is to raise it with Vi customer care on 199 from the Vi number before the port executes. Once the cutover SMS has landed, it is done; switching back means a fresh port in the other direction, and that one needs 90 days on Airtel first.

Porting from a different network instead

The mechanics above are the portability system's, not Vi's, so the shape holds whichever operator you are leaving β€” only the eligibility checks and the customer-care number change. If you are coming from Jio rather than Vi, porting Jio to Airtel walks the same route from the Jio side, including the Jio-specific rejection reasons.

After the port lands

The first week on a new network is when the plan you picked in a hurry becomes the plan you renew forever. Two things are worth ten minutes: checking your Airtel balance and validity with a single USSD code so you know what you actually bought, and comparing packs properly β€” our guide to saving on mobile recharge works through cost per GB per day rather than headline price, and the live offers page lists the recharge and payment-app cashback currently running.

Frequently asked questions

How do I port my Vodafone (Vi) number to Airtel?

SMS PORT followed by your 10-digit number to 1900 from the Vi SIM. A Unique Porting Code comes back β€” Airtel documents the reply as arriving from 1901. Give that code to Airtel with photo ID and address proof when you order the SIM, complete the doorstep KYC, and swap SIMs when the cutover SMS arrives.

What is the Vodafone port code?

Two things share the name. 1900 is the shortcode you send the SMS to, and it is the same on every Indian network. The UPC β€” Unique Porting Code, which Vi describes as 8 digits β€” is what comes back in the reply, and it is the code Airtel actually needs.

How long is the Vi UPC valid?

The operators publish different figures. Vi states 15 days, and 30 days for the Jammu and Kashmir, North East and Assam service areas. Airtel states the UPC "is valid only for four days". Both are official. Work to the four-day figure and you satisfy either.

How long does it take to port Vi to Airtel?

Also disputed. Vi publishes 3 working days within the same service area, up to 5 working days across circles, and up to 15 working days for J&K, Assam and the North East. Airtel says "barely 48 hours" within-state and up to 4 days cross-state. Plan for Vi's longer figures.

Can I port a Vi number that is less than 90 days old?

No. Vi requires "a minimum of 90 days of subscription" before it will process a port, and Airtel states the same 90-day condition from its side. The request is rejected below that.

Do I need to clear my Vi bill before porting?

On postpaid, yes β€” Vi requires all outstanding dues cleared with the existing operator, and Airtel lists no outstanding bills as a porting condition. On prepaid there is no bill, but any remaining balance and validity are lost at the switch.

Will I lose my Vi balance when I port to Airtel?

Yes. Talk time, data packs and unused validity stay with the Vi account and do not transfer. Time the port for when the pack is close to expiry rather than just after a recharge.

What documents do I need to port to Airtel?

Airtel asks for a valid government-recognised photo ID and address proof, given to the executive who completes KYC. Airtel states the SIM is delivered to your doorstep with no cost for the delivery itself.

Can I cancel a Vi port request after sending PORT to 1900?

Before the port executes, yes β€” an unused UPC simply expires, and Vi publishes a cancellation route for a request already applied for. Call 199 from the Vi number to raise it. Once the cutover has happened it cannot be undone; going back means a fresh port after 90 days on Airtel.

Does my number or circle change after porting?

Neither. Portability exists so the number survives the switch, and your home circle stays as it was β€” a Delhi Vi number ported to Airtel is a Delhi Airtel number. WhatsApp and UPI follow the number, though some apps re-verify the SIM after the swap.
