How to Know My Airtel Mobile Number: 5 Quick Ways (2026)

You picked up a spare handset, put an old Airtel SIM in it, and now you need the number to receive an OTP — but the number is the one thing you cannot remember. The fastest fix is a USSD code: dial *282# and Airtel flashes your own number back on screen in a second or two. It needs no balance, no data and no app.

That is the short answer. Below is every method that currently works, what each one costs you in time, and what to do when the code returns nothing.

How to know your Airtel number in under a minute

1. Open the phone dialler on the handset that has the Airtel SIM in it. If the phone has two SIM slots, note which slot the Airtel SIM sits in — you will be asked.
2. Dial *282# and press call. Pick the Airtel SIM if a slot prompt appears.
3. Wait for the flash message. A small grey box appears on screen with your 10-digit Airtel number. It disappears when you tap OK, so screenshot it or write it down first.
4. If *282# returns an error, dial *121*1# instead. This is the Airtel self-care menu route and returns the same information.

Airtel also documents *121*1# as a route to the same answer through the self-care menu, and *121*9# is widely used for the same purpose. If one returns "connection problem or invalid MMI code", try the next before assuming the SIM is the problem.

2. Airtel Thanks app

Sign in to the Airtel Thanks app on the handset and your number sits at the top of the home screen, next to your current plan and validity. This is the most useful method when you need more than the number — you can see the pack you are on, when it expires and what data is left in the same glance.

The catch is that it needs a working data connection and a signed-in session. On a handset you have just put the SIM into, the app will want to verify with an OTP sent to that very number, which is circular if the SIM is in another phone. Use USSD in that case.

3. Call 121 or 198

Dial 121 from the Airtel SIM and work through the IVR — it will state your number as part of the account summary. 198 is the 24x7 complaint line and can also confirm the number on the connection. Both are toll-free from an Airtel connection. This is the slowest route because you are listening to a menu, but it is the one that still works when USSD is disabled on a corporate or roaming SIM.

4. Android phone settings

On most Android handsets: Settings → About phone → Status → SIM card status → Phone number (some skins list it under Settings → Connections → SIM manager). On iPhone: Settings → General → About → Mobile Number.

Be careful with this one. The phone reads the number from a field written on the SIM itself, and operators do not always populate it — on a lot of Indian SIMs this field is blank or shows an old number from before a port. Treat it as a hint, and confirm with USSD before you give the number to anyone.

5. Airtel Selfcare on the web

Log in to Airtel's self-care site with the account and the number appears in the account header. Useful when the SIM is in a dongle, a router or a smartwatch and you cannot dial from it at all. Same limitation as the app: you need to already be able to sign in.

When the SIM is in a device you cannot dial from

Data-only SIMs in a dongle, a car dashcam or a kid's smartwatch will not run USSD. Three things that do work:

• Send a WhatsApp or SMS from that device to a friend's phone and read the number off their screen. Crude, instant, always right.
• Check the SIM's paper jacket. The 10-digit number is printed next to the ICCID on the plastic card the SIM was punched out of, if you still have it.
• Sign in to the Airtel Thanks app using an already-linked number and the linked accounts list will show the other connections on the same account.

Common problems and what they mean

"Invalid MMI code." Usually the slot prompt was answered with the wrong SIM, or the handset is set to a default SIM for USSD that is not the Airtel one. Retry and pick the Airtel slot explicitly.

The flash message shows a number you do not recognise. If the SIM was ported from another operator, the number stays the same after porting — a different number means it is a different SIM than you thought, not a porting side effect.
