Vi Number Check Code 2026: Dial *199# to Know Your Number

The Vi number check code is *199#. Key it into the dialler on the Vi SIM whose number you want, press call, and Vi returns your own mobile number as a flash message. No balance needed, no data, no app, and it works on a feature phone.

That is the only code Vi documents for this. If you have seen a longer string quoted as the "Vi number code", it is not on Vi's help pages — and the reason it sometimes works and sometimes does not is worth knowing, because it is the same reason the Settings screen on your phone so often shows nothing.

The one code, step by step

1. Put the Vi SIM in the handset and make sure the number is activated.
2. Open the dialler.
3. Key in *199# — the star and the hash both matter.
4. Press call.
5. Read the flash message. Your number is in it.

A flash message is not an SMS. It appears over whatever is on screen and it is gone once you dismiss it, so if you need the number, write it down before you tap OK. It does not land in your inbox afterwards.

If nothing comes back, Vi points at the usual three causes: a temporary network problem, weak signal, or a SIM that is not active yet. Move to a spot with bars and try again before deciding the code is wrong.

The same code does balance too

*199# is not a dedicated number-lookup code. It is Vi's whole self-service entry point — balance, data, validity, active packs and recent deductions all live behind the menu it opens, and the flash message with your number comes back as part of that.

This trips people up in both directions. Somebody looking for their number assumes a balance code cannot be the answer; somebody looking for balance assumes a number code cannot be. One code, both jobs. What the rest of that menu holds is in our Vi balance check guide.

The Vi App, if you have it

Log in to the Vi App and the registered mobile number sits on the home screen, next to your plan, usage and validity.

Worth saying plainly: this is circular if you are locked out. The app signs you in with the number you are trying to find, usually confirmed by an OTP to that number. It is the fastest route when you are already logged in, and no route at all when you are not.

Calling 199 or 198

Dial 199 or 198 from the Vi number, choose a language, and the call goes through to a customer care executive who can tell you the number you are calling from.

Slow compared to a four-character code, and worth it only when the code is not returning anything and the app is not an option — a SIM in a handset you have just been handed, for instance.

The fallback that always works

Call or message someone else and read your number off their screen.

It sounds too obvious to write down, and it is still the method that survives every failure above: no balance, no data, no app, no working USSD. Vi's own article lists it for exactly that reason. On a number you cannot get anything else out of, one missed call to a friend ends the problem.

Note what Vi does not document: a missed-call service of its own for this. Jio publishes 1299 for it and Airtel publishes its own route, but there is no equivalent Vi number in Vi's help pages. Guides that quote one are not quoting Vi.

Why Settings shows a blank

Android has Settings → About phone → SIM status, and iPhone has Settings → Phone → My Number. Both are real, both are quoted constantly, and both are blank on a great many Indian SIMs.

The reason is that neither screen knows your number. It reads a field written onto the SIM card itself, and operators very often leave that field empty — the number is a network record, not something the SIM has to carry. A blank there means the field was never written. It does not mean your SIM is faulty and it does not mean the number is unassigned.

On iPhone you can type the number into Settings → Phone → My Number yourself once you know it, which makes the screen useful the second time you need it.

The number printed on the SIM is not your number

The long digit string on the plastic is an identifier for the SIM card. Vi's own help page calls it the IMSI stored physically on the back of the card; the number printed across a SIM is usually its 19- or 20-digit ICCID. Either way it identifies the card, not the connection, and it is not what somebody means when they ask for your Vi number.

You will need it when a store swaps or replaces the SIM. You will never need it to give somebody your phone number.

Before you recharge a number you just found

People go looking for their own number for a reason, and the reason is usually a recharge.
