To check your Vi balance, dial *199# from your Vi number. One code opens the whole self-service menu — main balance, data balance, validity, active packs and recent deductions all sit behind it, and it works on a feature phone with no data and no app.

How to check your Vi balance in 30 seconds

1. Open the phone dialler on the handset holding the Vi SIM. Not a second phone, not a browser — the request is answered for whichever SIM places the call.
2. Key in *199# exactly, including the star and the hash.
3. Press call. If the phone has two SIMs, pick the Vi one when it asks.
4. A menu appears on screen within a few seconds. Do not dismiss it.
5. Reply with the number of the option you want — balance and usage, validity, active packs — and send.
6. Read the result. Each reply digs one level deeper into the menu, so you can move from balance to data to validity without redialling.

If the menu never appears, you are almost always on a handset that swallowed the request. Restart the phone and dial again before assuming the code is wrong.

What *199# actually shows you

Vi routes every self-service query through the same menu rather than handing out a separate code per question. What you get depends on which option you pick.

Main balance

The principal talk time sitting on the account, in rupees. On an unlimited plan this number is often small or zero and that is normal — your calls are coming from the plan, not from talk time. Main balance only matters for out-of-bundle charges.

Data balance

Vi documents two routes for data: the Vi App homescreen, and *199# followed by the relevant menu option. The USSD reply reports what the network has metered, which lags what your phone has counted — Android and iOS both count a little differently, so treat the operator figure as the one that bills you.

Service validity

The date your current plan stops working, again from the same menu. This is the number worth checking, not the balance: a prepaid account with balance but expired validity still cannot make a call.

Active packs and plans

From the Vi App the path is My Account → Active Packs & recharge history, where balance, data pack details and all active services appear together. The USSD equivalent is the matching option under *199#. Use this when you suspect a pack you did not intend to buy is still running.

Recent deductions

In the app: Recharge and more → History. On USSD: *199#, then the relevant option under Balance and Usage. This is the screen to open when the balance dropped and you do not know why — it names the charge instead of leaving you guessing.

The other three ways, and when each is better

The Vi App

Your balance, data balance and service validity all sit on the homescreen, and your registered mobile number is printed there too. Best when you want everything at a glance and you already have data. Useless when you have run out of exactly that.

199 and 198

Dial 199 or 198, pick a language, and the call routes to a customer care executive. Slower than USSD, and worth it only when the answer needs a human — a wrong deduction, a pack that did not activate, a number you cannot verify any other way.

WhatsApp

Vi supports checking your account balance over a WhatsApp chat. Convenient on a phone you already use for messaging, and it leaves a written record of what the balance was — handy if you are about to dispute a deduction.

How to find your own Vi number

Vi's own help pages do not document them — every official answer, for balance, data, validity, packs and deductions alike, is *199# plus a menu option.

The reason matters. Those sub-codes are just the menu path typed ahead of time, and the menu is not identical in every circle or on every plan. When the numbering shifts, a memorised shortcut lands on the wrong option or returns nothing at all, while *199# keeps working because you read the menu as it is today. Also worth knowing: none of this works while roaming internationally on a Vi SIM, and none of it works from a phone that is not holding the SIM. USSD is answered per SIM, on the network, in real time.
