How to Find Your BSNL Number in 2026: 5 Ways That Work

The fastest way to find your own BSNL number is to call or message another phone from the BSNL SIM and read the number off that phone's screen. It needs no code, no data and no app, it works on a feature phone, and unlike every USSD string floating around the internet it behaves identically in all 22 circles.

That sounds like a cop-out answer until you understand why this page does not simply hand you a four-character code the way our Jio, Airtel and Vi guides do. BSNL is not one system. It is two, split by state, and that is the reason every "BSNL number check code" list you find online contradicts the next one.

Why there is no single BSNL number-check code

Jio publishes a missed-call number. Vi publishes one USSD code that flashes your number back. Airtel publishes its own. For BSNL, search results offer four or five different codes, each presented with total confidence, none agreeing with the others.

We went looking for BSNL's own published answer before writing this, and could not get one: at the time of writing, bsnl.co.in did not respond to connection attempts from our network at all — not the FAQ pages, not the service pages, not the root domain. So we are not going to repeat codes we found on aggregator sites and dress them up as official. If a code is listed here, it came from something BSNL actually publishes.

What we can show you is the structural reason those lists disagree. BSNL's own self-care system is split into two separate platforms by state, and a subscriber in Kerala is not talking to the same system as a subscriber in Delhi.

The two BSNL self-care zones

Open BSNL's self-care portal at selfcare.bsnl.co.in and the first thing it does is ask for your state, then redirect you to one of two entirely different systems.

These states and union territories go to BSNL's self-care login at selfcare.bsnl.co.in: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, Mumbai and Ladakh.

These go to a different host entirely, wsc.cdr.bsnl.co.in: Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Puducherry and Lakshadweep.

Two portals, two back-ends, one brand. A shortcode that resolves on one of them has no obligation to resolve on the other, which is exactly what a subscriber discovers when a code that worked for a cousin in Chennai returns nothing in Lucknow. Treat any BSNL code you read online — here or anywhere — as circle-specific until your own handset proves otherwise.

Five ways to find your BSNL number

1. Call another phone (works everywhere)

Dial any other phone you have access to from the BSNL SIM and let it ring. Your number appears on the receiving handset's screen. If the other phone is not to hand, send it an SMS instead — the sender number is in the message header.

This is the method to use when you need the answer in the next thirty seconds. It has no circle dependency, no menu to navigate and nothing to fail.

One caveat: if you have ever set the BSNL number to withhold caller ID, the receiving phone shows "Private" or "Unknown" instead. Sending an SMS still works in that case, because caller-ID suppression does not apply to the message header.

2. The BSNL Selfcare app

BSNL publishes a self-care app on Google Play under the publisher name BHARAT SANCHAR NIGAM LIMITED, described on the listing as "All BSNL services in one place" and giving you "full control of your BSNL Mobile and Landline/FTTH services". It carries interactive usage dashboards, one-touch recharge, bill payment for postpaid, landline and FTTH, plan expiration alerts, DND management and complaint logging.

The account you sign in with is keyed to your mobile number, so once you are in, the number is on screen along with the plan and usage behind it.

A conflict worth knowing about: there are currently two BSNL self-care apps on Google Play, one listed simply as BSNL Selfcare and another as BSNL Selfcare (New), under different package names. Both come from BSNL. We are not going to tell you one of them is wrong. Install whichever one your circle's support staff point you at, and if the first refuses your number, try the other before concluding your account is broken.

3. The BSNL self-care web portal

Go to selfcare.bsnl.co.in, choose your state, and you land on whichever of the two portals described above serves your circle. Sign in and the account details, including the number itself, are on the dashboard.

This is the slowest of the five and the one most likely to stall, because you need working credentials for a portal you may never have registered on. It is worth the effort only if you also need billing or usage history in the same sitting.

4. Sanchar Saathi, when the number is not the one in your hand

This is the route almost nobody knows about, and it answers a harder question than "what is this SIM's number".

The Department of Telecommunications runs Sanchar Saathi at sancharsaathi.gov.in, and one of its services is TAFCOP — described on the portal as letting you "Know mobile connections in your name". It lets a subscriber "check the number of mobile connections taken in his/her name" and report connections "either not required or not taken by the subscriber". It shows connections across all telecom providers, not just BSNL. Login is by OTP: "Login into the portal by using the OTP received on the mobile number."

That last detail is the limitation, and it is a real one. TAFCOP needs a number you can already receive an OTP on. So it is the right tool for "which BSNL numbers are registered on my ID that I have forgotten about" and the wrong tool for "this SIM in my hand is completely unknown to me". Used for what it is, it is the only method on this page that finds numbers you did not know existed.

The same portal also carries CEIR for blocking a lost or stolen handset, Chakshu for reporting suspected fraud communications and spam, an IMEI genuineness check, and a service for reporting incoming international calls that display an Indian number. Worth a bookmark independent of this question.

5. Your phone's own SIM settings (usually a dead end, but free to try)

On Android the path is roughly Settings → About phone → SIM status, on iPhone Settings → General → About. There is a field there for the phone number.

It is blank far more often than not. That field is not read from the network — it is read from a slot on the SIM card itself, which the operator has to have written the number into, and Indian operators frequently leave it empty. A blank field tells you nothing about the SIM being faulty. It takes five seconds to check, so check it, but do not spend time troubleshooting it.

The long string of digits printed across the plastic of the SIM card is not your phone number either. That is the card's own serial identifier — useful to a store when replacing the SIM, useless for calling you.

What to do with a code you found somewhere else

If you already have a BSNL code from a forum or a listicle, there is no harm in dialling it. USSD requests are answered by the network in real time for whichever SIM places the call, they cost nothing on BSNL's own network, and a code that is not supported simply returns an error.

What is worth avoiding is memorising one and trusting it. Given the two-zone split above, the honest expectation is that a BSNL code works in some circles and not others, and may change without anyone announcing it. Dial it, read whatever menu appears, and fall back to method 1 the moment it does not answer.

How the other networks handle this

BSNL is the awkward one. The other three operators each publish a single documented route, and if you are switching between SIMs it helps to know which is which:

Once you have the number

The reason most people go hunting for their own number is that a recharge, a KYC form or a bank verification is waiting on it.
